It was incorporated in 2015. Volkswagen is an investor in Rivian and an equal partner in a separate technology joint venture. Rivian’s latest results in the evidence covered here, for 2025, show positive consolidated gross profit but a substantial net loss and a gross loss in its Automotive segment.

The business brings together consumer vehicles, commercial electric delivery vehicles, and software and electrical-architecture work. Amazon-related revenue is primarily associated with delivery-vehicle sales; the company also began selling Rivian Adventure Gear through Amazon.com in June 2025.
Who owns Rivian, and is it owned by Volkswagen?
Rivian is a public company owned by its shareholders. Volkswagen Group is an investor, but the available company disclosures do not describe Volkswagen as Rivian’s parent or sole owner. The two companies also participate in a separate, equally owned technology venture.

Volkswagen’s investment and the joint venture
Volkswagen Group’s annual report says Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, LLC began operating their joint venture on November 13, 2024. Rivian and Volkswagen each own 50%. The venture is intended to develop software-defined vehicle architectures and related technology for future vehicles from both companies. The equal ownership applies to the venture, not to Rivian itself.
Volkswagen reported that it converted a $1 billion convertible note issued in June 2024 into Rivian shares in December 2024. It also reported investing approximately $1.3 billion in 2024 for licenses and its joint-venture interest, then purchasing $1 billion of Rivian ordinary shares in June 2025. Volkswagen said that purchase raised its equity interest in Rivian to 12.3%.

Volkswagen’s 2025 annual report also described up to a further $2.5 billion of milestone-dependent investment planned for 2026 and 2027, including up to $1.5 billion in Rivian ordinary shares. Those are reported plans contingent on milestones, not confirmation that the investments have since been completed. The 12.3% figure is Volkswagen’s reported interest after its June 2025 purchase, not a current ownership percentage verified for a later date. How did Rivian develop its business?
Rivian’s history is best understood through the combination of its consumer and commercial vehicle businesses with its technology work. Its consumer-facing R1 vehicles serve the company’s retail business, while its electric delivery vehicles supply commercial customers, including Amazon. Software and electrical-architecture development add another source of activity, including work for the Volkswagen joint venture.

The company’s 2025 filing reports $900 million in revenue from Amazon.com and its affiliates, primarily tied to electric delivery-vehicle sales. For context, the same filing reports $823 million in 2023 and $1.040 billion in 2024. These figures show Amazon’s significance as a commercial customer, but do not by themselves establish the profitability of those sales.
Rivian also sells consumer products beyond vehicles: it said sales of Rivian Adventure Gear on Amazon.com began in June 2025. That is distinct from the delivery-vehicle relationship.

Was Rivian profitable in 2025?
No. Rivian reported a net loss of $3.626 billion for fiscal 2025. It did report $144 million in consolidated gross profit, but gross profit is not net income: it does not account for all of the company’s operating expenses and other costs. The segment results also show why the consolidated figure should not be read as proof that vehicle manufacturing had become gross profitable.
| Rivian 2025 result | Amount | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicles produced | 42,284 | Company-reported production for 2025 |
| Vehicles delivered | 42,247 | Company-reported deliveries for 2025 |
| Total revenue | $5.387 billion | Consolidated revenue for 2025 |
| Consolidated gross profit | $144 million | Gross profit across the company’s reported business |
| Automotive gross result | $432 million loss | Gross loss in the Automotive segment |
| Software and Services gross result | $576 million profit | Gross profit in the Software and Services segment |
| Net result | $3.626 billion loss | Consolidated net loss |
All figures are U.S. dollars and come from Rivian’s Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, filed in February 2026. The filing attributes the increase in Software and Services gross profit primarily to electrical-architecture and software-development services for the Volkswagen joint venture, as well as remarketing and vehicle repair and maintenance services.

What is Rivian’s future outlook?
In its 2025 Form 10-K, Rivian said it expected customer deliveries of R2 to begin in the second quarter of 2026. The company described R2 as foundational to longer-term growth and profit potential, and said it would use technologies developed for R1 while aiming to reduce complexity and improve cost efficiency. This is a filing-era management expectation, not confirmation that deliveries began on schedule.
Whether R2 improves Rivian’s prospects depends on execution, market conditions, and the economics of production and sales. Rivian’s filing identifies product development and launch, scaling production and deliveries, attracting demand, controlling costs, obtaining financing, and competing as factors that can affect future results. It cautions: “Our historical results are not necessarily indicative of the results that may be expected for any period in the future.” That statement is the company’s own warning, not an independent forecast.
What to watch when assessing the outlook
- Production and deliveries: whether Rivian can scale output and deliver new models as intended.
- Automotive economics: the Automotive segment’s gross result, rather than consolidated gross profit alone.
- Costs and financing: whether manufacturing costs improve and the company can meet its financing needs.
- R2 launch execution: the timing, demand, and cost efficiency of the planned new vehicle program.
- Software and Services: whether this segment’s contribution continues and how much depends on joint-venture work and other services.
- Customer exposure: how commercial-fleet revenue and major customers, including Amazon, shape the business.
Rivian’s disclosures provide company results and management expectations, not a basis on their own for an investment recommendation. The key distinction for readers is between the company’s demonstrated results—such as its 2025 losses—and plans whose success depends on future execution.
