PerthNow reported on 22 February 2025 that Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm had foreshadowed further job losses in Western Australia during 2025, as the company put greater emphasis on Pilbara cost control and productivity. The report did not specify how many additional jobs might go or when. Its separate figure of about 500 jobs refers to an earlier, reported 3% decline in Rio Tinto’s WA full-time headcount—not the forecast cuts.
What the February 2025 report said
PerthNow reported that Rio Tinto’s full-time WA division headcount had fallen 3% over the year covered by its article, an approximate decline of 500 jobs. It then reported that Stausholm had foreshadowed further WA job losses in 2025. Those are distinct claims: the 3% and roughly 500 jobs describe a past headcount change, while the additional losses were a forecast with no stated total or schedule. PerthNow’s 22 February 2025 report did not identify specific roles or sites expected to be affected.
Why Rio Tinto said it was tightening Pilbara costs
Stausholm described the approach as ongoing optimisation and adjustment. As PerthNow reported it, he said the company had focused on repair work and maintenance after the Juukan Gorge crisis, then faced post-COVID inflation that pushed unit costs down the priority list. With production stabilised, he said, Rio Tinto could increase productivity. These are the executive’s stated explanations for the renewed focus; they do not independently establish why particular jobs changed.

PerthNow also reported that CFO Peter Cunningham told investors strict cost management was being rolled out in WA, but its accessible account did not provide a full direct quotation from him.
What the separate May 2026 update adds
A later PerthNow report, published 7 May 2026, described anticipated redundancies in Rio Tinto’s Perth office. It attributed to CEO Simon Trott the position that front-line Pilbara roles would be shielded while operational responsibility moved from offices toward mine sites. The report relied partly on unnamed sources for the expected scope of office redundancies; Trott did not provide their scale or duration. It therefore does not establish a company-confirmed total. This is a later, separate account—not detail that was included in the February 2025 forecast. In particular, the 2025 story did not specify an office-based target or say which roles would be protected.
How WA iron ore figures fit—and what they do not prove
The WA Government’s January 2026 iron ore profile offers operating and industry context, not confirmation of Rio Tinto staffing changes. It reports that Rio Tinto’s WA iron ore shipments fell 0.7% to 326 million tonnes in 2025, and gives 2026 shipment guidance of 323–338 million tonnes. Separately, it says direct employment across the entire WA iron ore industry—not Rio Tinto alone—rose 3.9% to 65,496 full-time equivalent workers in 2024–25. See the WA Government iron ore profile.

Shipments, industry-wide employment and one company’s WA headcount measure different things. None of the government figures verifies the reported Rio Tinto headcount decline or determines how many jobs may be affected by any later changes.

- The February 2025 report distinguished an earlier approximate 500-job decline from additional losses Stausholm had foreshadowed.
- That report supplied no confirmed number, timetable or role list for the further losses.
- The May 2026 follow-up concerned anticipated Perth-office redundancies and attributed protection of front-line Pilbara roles to Trott; it did not give a confirmed redundancy total.
For workers assessing their options, the available reporting is not enough to determine an individual role’s risk. Check any direct communication from Rio Tinto or an employer, and use the company’s careers page for current vacancies rather than treating press reports as a role-by-role notice.
