That article said about 20,000 users had joined the mail-in option in recent months. The service gives people outside Ridwell’s local pickup zones another way to send certain hard-to-recycle materials, but its current price, accepted items and downstream capacity all matter when weighing the cost and environmental trade-offs.
What Ridwell’s 130,000-customer figure means
GeekWire reported on Dec. 11, 2025, that Ridwell had reached 130,000 customers across all 50 states. The same report said the company had attracted about 20,000 users to its mail-in service in recent months. Those are different measures: 130,000 was the company-wide count, while roughly 20,000 described recent mail-in adoption, not the total number of mail-in customers over the service’s lifetime. GeekWire’s report does not characterize the count as independently audited.

Ridwell’s current home page describes a community of more than 150,000 “Ridwellers.” That is the company’s own website language, accessed Oct. 4, 2026, rather than an audited customer total. Ridwell’s home page also distinguishes its nationwide mail-in option from pickup service whose availability depends on neighborhood.
How mail-in service works—and what it costs
In GeekWire’s December 2025 account, customers placed accepted materials in a bag supplied by Ridwell, scheduled a home pickup through the company’s U.S. Postal Service integration, and could track the material’s journey online. The article named multilayer plastics such as chip bags and candy wrappers, and plastic film such as grocery bags and bubble wrap, as accepted examples at that time. Accepted materials and terms can change, so check the live service details before sending anything.

The prices reported in that article were $30 to start and about $9 for each return, with no monthly subscription for mail-in at the time. Those are dated reported prices, not a current quote. Ridwell’s current homepage advertises mail-in service starting at $10 per bag; the reviewed service information does not provide a complete current fee schedule. Check the live terms for the total cost before purchase.
The company’s conventional pickup service is a separate option. GeekWire described it as biweekly and reported a $20 monthly base service in December 2025, including plastics, with add-ons such as Styrofoam or batteries. Ridwell’s current homepage says pickup starts at $20 per month, but availability depends on location. Its site invites visitors to check by address. Check Ridwell’s current service and availability information rather than assuming pickup or a particular price applies where you live.

Where the collected material goes
GeekWire reported that mail-in and pickup materials went through 10 Ridwell-run processing facilities. The company sorts and bales material before shipping it to partners; examples named in the report include Trex, which makes composite decking, Hydroblox, which makes drainage materials, and ByFusion, which makes construction-grade building blocks. These examples show some reported destinations, not proof that every collected item is recycled or that a partner can accept unlimited volume.
A Feb. 21, 2026, Los Angeles Times report describes material being sorted and stored until enough accumulates for a receiving facility. It also reports that Hydroblox can take only limited volumes of chip bags and was often at capacity, and that some material travels hundreds or thousands of miles. Ridwell vice president of partnerships Gerrine Pan described sorting as “our special sauce”; the practical question for a customer is not only how material is sorted, but whether a receiver has room for it and what happens when it does not.

What the environmental trade-offs depend on
There is no comprehensive lifecycle analysis of Ridwell’s mail-in service in these reports, so they do not establish a definitive environmental verdict. The evidence does show why collection alone is not the same as a guaranteed recycling outcome: receiving capacity can be limited, some material travels long distances, and difficult plastics may have weak markets.
The Los Angeles Times quoted Nick Lapis, director of advocacy for Californians Against Waste, saying that much of the material collected by boutique services such as Ridwell is difficult to manage or lacks strong recycling markets. Ridwell says it vets destinations, prioritizes reuse where possible, prefers local partners, and declines items when it lacks a downstream partner it can stand behind. CEO Ryan Metzger told the Times the company is “careful not to present plastic recycling as a cure-all.” Those positions help frame the debate, but do not substitute for item-by-item destination and capacity information.

Material categories also face different hurdles. Batteries and light bulbs need special handling; the Times reports that many local haulers do not accept them because they can pose hazards to workers and equipment. Multilayer packaging and plastic film instead contend with limited receiving capacity and weak markets. A single label such as “hard to recycle” can obscure these differences.

- Accepted materials: Verify that each item is currently accepted. Do not assume an example in a past report remains eligible.
- Total cost: Compare the current charge for the bag or pickup with any other fees and with how often you will use the service.
- Convenience: Weigh home pickup and package tracking against the pickup cadence, preparation requirements and effort of local drop-off options.
- Destination transparency: Look for the receiving partner and what the material becomes, while distinguishing a named destination from proof that every item reaches it.
- Capacity and distance: Ask whether the downstream partner can currently receive the material and how far it travels, particularly for plastics with limited markets.
For Ridwell, mail-in can extend access beyond the metro areas served by conventional pickup. In December 2025, GeekWire reported pickup in eight metro areas across seven states; Ridwell’s current site directs visitors to check address-level availability. The broader reach answers a convenience and access problem, but it does not by itself answer whether a particular material has a viable destination.
