Argentina generally allows its nationals to acquire another nationality without automatically losing Argentine nationality. But keeping two nationalities does not mean you can use either passport interchangeably at Argentina’s border: entry and exit procedures depend on the other country, where you live, and in some cases what you declare about moving to Argentina.
Does Argentina allow dual citizenship?
Argentina’s migration authority, the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (DNM), says Argentines do not lose Argentine nationality simply because they naturalize in another country. Its 1984 instructions state: “los argentinos no pierden su nacionalidad por haberse naturalizado en un país extranjero” (“Argentines do not lose their nationality by having naturalized in a foreign country”). That statement addresses retention of Argentine nationality; it does not determine whether another country allows dual nationality or how that country treats its own citizens.

Argentina’s current Nationality and Citizenship Law, Ley 346, consolidated and updated to include Decreto 366/2025, describes who is Argentine and sets current naturalization provisions. Those provisions are separate from the rule that acquiring another nationality does not, by itself, cancel an existing Argentine nationality.
What happens to your existing passport?
The DNM’s dual-nationality guidance deals with how Argentine migration authorities handle travel documents at entry and exit. It does not say that a passport issued by the other country is automatically cancelled when its holder becomes Argentine, nor that Argentine nationality automatically invalidates an existing foreign passport. Whether a passport remains valid under its issuing country’s law is a separate question.

For travel to or from Argentina, the applicable procedure depends on whether Argentina has a dual-nationality agreement with the country of the acquired nationality, whether the traveler resides in Argentina, and the person’s circumstances and declared intention. The DNM sets out different document requirements for these categories, rather than a universal rule that a dual national may choose either passport at every border.
How Argentina’s border rules vary
If the other country has an agreement with Argentina
The DNM lists Spain, Italy, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, and Sweden among countries with dual-nationality agreements. It also lists the United States only for naturalizations through October 20, 1981. Check the DNM’s current list and the precise category that applies to you; the US date is a limitation in the agency’s guidance, not a general statement about all US-Argentine dual nationals.

For Argentines naturalized in an agreement country, the DNM describes procedures that vary by residence. For example, it says Argentine residents in this category may depart using a valid travel document of the acquired nationality together with Argentine identity documentation, while re-entry requires a valid Argentine travel document. The page also describes annotations that may be made on the foreign document. Consult the DNM’s instructions for the complete requirements for your specific situation.
If the other country has no agreement with Argentina
The DNM says Argentines naturalized in a country without an agreement are treated as Argentines for relevant migration purposes. Its guidance sets Argentine-document requirements for departure and re-entry, while allowing foreign-document procedures in specified circumstances. Do not assume that possessing a valid foreign passport alone satisfies Argentina’s requirements for either direction of travel.

If you live outside Argentina or intend to move there
Residence can change which procedure applies. The DNM distinguishes Argentines living abroad from residents of Argentina, and its guidance says a declared intention to reside permanently in Argentina may affect treatment as Argentine and the documents required for departure. If your residence or plans have changed, confirm the appropriate category before you travel rather than relying on the procedure that applied on a previous trip.
What to check before traveling
- Confirm the agreement category. Check the DNM’s current dual-nationality page for the country and the applicable dates, if any.
- Identify your residence category. The procedures can differ for residents of Argentina and Argentines living abroad.
- Review both the entry and exit requirements. Do not infer that the document accepted for departure will also be sufficient for re-entry.
- Ask about changes in intention or status. If you plan to move to Argentina permanently, ask the DNM or an Argentine consulate how that affects your documents and border treatment.
The DNM’s 1984 instructions also say that a foreign passport or identity document showing a new nationality may be evidence of acquiring it in migration proceedings. That is an evidentiary point, not a statement that Argentine nationality has been forfeited.

Current naturalization rules are a separate issue
For a foreign national seeking Argentine naturalization, the current consolidated text of Ley 346, as updated after Decreto 366/2025, generally requires an adult to have resided continuously and legally in Argentina for the two years before applying, with no departure during that period, or to establish a qualifying relevant investment. Applications are handled by the DNM, which coordinates with RENAPER for the Argentine identity document. This is background for applicants—not a condition an existing Argentine must meet to retain nationality after acquiring a second one.

Argentina also restored Ley 346 through Ley 23059, after repealing former Ley 21.795. The law provides for recovery by operation of law for people whose nationality was cancelled under the former law, with a separate qualification concerning citizenship rights.
