That launch is now historical: as of 8 October 2026, Melbourne Airport says Rex’s Melbourne–Perth services are cancelled, and Rex says its domestic flights between major cities are cancelled.
What Rex announced in May 2024
Rex announced the new route on 24 May 2024, with five flights a week planned to begin on 28 June. The airline said the Melbourne–Perth service would add close to 90,000 seats. The holiday timing refers to that 2024 launch; the available announcements do not establish exact school-holiday dates for each state.
Rex advertised launch fares from $299 each way in economy and $999 each way in business class. These were historical starting fares, not current offers. The airline said checked baggage and refreshments were included, subject to availability and fare conditions. Rex’s 24 May 2024 route announcement contains the launch details.
How the capacity estimates differ
The launch figures refer to different scopes. Rex’s estimate of close to 90,000 added seats concerned the Melbourne–Perth route. The Government of Western Australia later said the Melbourne and Adelaide launches together would add eight inbound flights a week and estimated 60,000 additional inbound seats annually across both routes. The government figure is not a replacement estimate for Rex’s Melbourne–Perth route alone. The government announcement was published on 28 June 2024.

Does Rex still fly between Perth and Melbourne?
No. As of 8 October 2026, Melbourne Airport’s notice says Rex services from Melbourne to Perth have been cancelled. Rex’s own public notice says all domestic Rex flights between major cities are cancelled and records that the group entered voluntary administration on 30 July 2024. Because airline operations can change, check current notices before making travel plans.
What to do if your Rex booking was cancelled
Rex says affected passengers may contact the airline about a refund, credit, or transfer to the next available flight. The available option depends on the booking and circumstances, so a particular outcome is not guaranteed.

- Contact Rex through its official passenger information channel and ask which options apply to your cancellation.
- If you booked through a travel agent or another booking provider, contact that provider as well. Keep your booking reference and cancellation notice available.
- Rex also publishes information about a federal booking guarantee for qualifying cancellations where the company cannot provide a refund. Check the official information and your case details rather than assuming you qualify.
Rex’s carriage information recommends travel insurance, but insurance should not be treated as a guaranteed remedy for a specific cancelled ticket.

The 2024 Rex fares cannot tell you what a ticket costs today. Compare services that are currently operating for the same travel dates and direction, and check fare class, baggage, schedule, and booking conditions before judging the total cost. The historical announcement alone does not establish that Rex’s fares were cheaper than a competitor’s.
