Use these retail management multiple-choice questions to practise identifying market-segmentation bases. The questions cover geographic, demographic, psychographic, behavioral, benefit, and volume segmentation, with explanations that show how to classify each example. The questions are provided here as a study set; the sources do not establish a separate PDF with this exact title.

Market segmentation: the core idea

Market segmentation divides a broad market into smaller groups whose members share needs or characteristics and are expected to respond similarly to marketing. For retailers, it is a way to decide which customers to serve and how to tailor products, services, and marketing rather than treating every shopper as identical.

OpenStax’s Principles of Marketing defines segmentation as “the process of dividing a target market into smaller, more precisely defined groups of consumers or organizations who have common needs and are expected to respond similarly to a marketing action.”

  1. Demographic

  3. Psychographic
  4. Benefit

Answer: 2. Geographic. The distinction is where customers live and the local climate. Location, region, language, and population density are also geographic variables.

Question 2: Demographic segmentation

A bookseller groups customers by age and offers reading products for children, teenagers, and adults. Which basis is primary?

  1. Behavioral
  2. Geographic
  3. Demographic
  4. Volume

Answer: 3. Demographic. Age is a demographic characteristic. Income, education, occupation, gender, and household or family structure are other examples.

Question 3: Psychographic segmentation

  1. Psychographic
  2. Volume
  3. Geographic
  4. Demographic

Answer: 1. Psychographic. The segment is defined by values and lifestyle, rather than by location or the amount purchased.

Question 4: Behavioral segmentation

A store promotes gift bundles to customers shopping for a holiday. Which segmentation basis is most directly reflected?

  1. Benefit
  2. Behavioral
  3. Demographic
  4. Geographic

Answer: 2. Behavioral. The occasion for shopping is a purchase-related behavior. Usage and purchasing patterns can also be behavioral variables.

Question 5: Benefit segmentation

A toothpaste retailer groups shoppers according to whether they want sensitivity relief or whiter teeth. Which basis is being used?

  1. Benefit
  2. Geographic
  3. Volume
  4. Psychographic

Answer: 1. Benefit. The groups seek different results from the product. Benefit segmentation focuses on the outcome or feature customers want.

Question 6: Volume segmentation

A retailer distinguishes customers who buy a product frequently or in large quantities from those who buy it occasionally. Which basis is primary?

  1. Psychographic
  2. Demographic
  3. Volume
  4. Geographic

  1. Segmentation of organizational buyers
  2. Psychographic segmentation only
  3. Household demographic segmentation only
  4. Geographic segmentation only

Answer: 1. Segmentation of organizational buyers. Business markets can be divided using characteristics such as industry, customer size, product use, and purchasing function.

Question 8: Selecting a useful segment

A retailer identifies a group with a shared need but cannot determine its size or reach its members through available channels. Which segment-evaluation issue is most clearly present?

  1. Whether the segment is measurable and accessible
  2. Whether every customer has the same income
  3. Whether the group is defined only by age
  4. Whether the retailer has eliminated all other segments

Answer: 1. Whether the segment is measurable and accessible. A retailer needs to be able to evaluate a segment and reach it sufficiently to decide whether it can be served. OpenStax discusses criteria for selecting target markets, including whether a segment can be measured and accessed.

How to identify the segmentation basis in a question

  1. Find the customer difference. Is the example about where people live, who they are, what they value, how they shop, what result they want, or how much they buy?
  2. Connect that difference to the category. Location points to geographic; personal characteristics to demographic; lifestyle or values to psychographic; occasions or usage patterns to behavioral; desired results to benefit; and purchase amount or frequency to volume.
  3. Check whether the question names a primary basis. Retailers can combine segmentation bases. If a scenario mentions both income and location, it may describe both; a well-written MCQ should make clear which variable it asks you to classify.

Why textbooks use different lists

Segmentation categories are teaching frameworks, and textbooks do not always present the same list. OpenStax’s Principles of Marketing highlights geographic, demographic, psychographic, and behavioral approaches for consumer markets. OpenStax’s Introduction to Business presents demographic, geographic, psychographic, benefit, and volume forms. These approaches overlap: benefit and volume are useful ways to describe what customers seek and how they purchase, while the four-category framework groups common consumer variables differently.

For retail decisions, the category label matters less than identifying the customer distinction accurately and using it to focus marketing resources on groups the retailer can evaluate and serve.
