Not as a confirmed count of consoles sold to consumers. In January 2022, Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad estimated that more than 12 million Xbox Series X|S consoles had been shipped worldwide. Microsoft did not announce that figure as official hardware sales, and shipments are not the same as retail sales to buyers.
What the 12 million figure actually measures
On January 11, 2022, TweakTown quoted Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad: “This would put Xbox Series X|S over 12 million shipped according to our estimates.” The wording matters: this was an analyst estimate of worldwide shipments, not a Microsoft-confirmed tally of customer purchases. TweakTown’s January 2022 report attributed the estimate to Ahmad.
Shipments describe units sent into the sales channel; sell-through describes units purchased by customers. The two can differ because consoles may remain with retailers or distributors. Contemporary reporting said Microsoft did not disclose Xbox hardware unit sales, leaving third-party estimates to fill that gap. GameSpot likewise described the global 12 million figure as an analyst estimate. GameSpot’s January 12, 2022 report
What other sales data showed at the time
Separate UK retail figures provided a regional point of comparison, not the basis for the worldwide estimate:

- More than one million sold: GfK data reported by GamesIndustry.biz and relayed by GameSpot showed that the Xbox Series X|S family had passed one million UK sales since its November 2020 launch.
- 108% monthly increase: UK sales rose 108% month over month in December 2021, which GameSpot connected to improved availability of Series X consoles. December was the family’s biggest UK sales month since launch.
Those figures apply to the UK and the stated period. They should not be read as current sales, global totals, or evidence that the UK sales count explains Ahmad’s worldwide shipment estimate.
Why the consoles were difficult to find
Supply constraints and strong demand shaped the launch period. In a New York Times interview quoted by GameSpot around January 2022, Xbox head Phil Spencer said demand was exceeding supply across the market, even though supply was substantial. The difficulty finding a console therefore did not mean Microsoft had shipped fewer units than in prior generations.

Ahmad’s explanation also pointed to Microsoft’s two-model approach. The higher-end Series X and lower-cost, all-digital Series S gave buyers different options, and increased Series S production reportedly made more Xbox consoles available than if Microsoft had produced only Series X. That context helps explain the combined shipment estimate, but it does not establish a separate unit count for either model. TweakTown

The 12 million estimate is a dated snapshot from January 2022, not a current cumulative total. The cited reporting does not establish an official present-day Xbox Series X|S sales count, a Series X-versus-Series S split, or current availability. The original headline’s use of “sold” is therefore broader than the attributed evidence: the supported claim is that Niko Partners estimated more than 12 million units shipped worldwide by that point.

A January 12, 2022 Thurrott.com headline also used “sold” while attributing the number to Ahmad; the page’s available search-result content corroborates that historical headline context, but it does not turn the estimate into a Microsoft-reported sales figure. Thurrott.com
