Apple executives reportedly considered acquiring Mistral AI and Perplexity, but the August 26, 2025 report described internal debate and banker pitches—not a confirmed offer, formal negotiations, signed agreement or completed transaction. The Information reported that Services chief Eddy Cue favored a major AI acquisition, while software chief Craig Federighi and others preferred continuing to build internally. Reuters said it could not independently verify the account.
That distinction matters for investors and Apple users. Mistral could address Apple’s model technology and research gap; Perplexity could address search, retrieval and consumer-facing answers. Neither purchase was publicly confirmed through the research cutoff of August 16, 2026.
What Apple reportedly discussed
The Information reported that Apple executives discussed potentially buying Paris-based Mistral AI and AI-search company Perplexity. Investment bankers were also said to have approached Apple about a large AI transaction.
The report did not establish that Apple contacted either company with a bid, entered exclusive talks or obtained approval from Chief Executive Tim Cook. It described a strategic argument inside Apple: buy a substantial AI capability to accelerate the company’s roadmap, or keep developing the technology in-house. The Information also raised a possible “license-and-hire” arrangement with Mistral rather than a conventional acquisition, although the status of any such proposal was not established.

What the reporting supports
- Internal Apple consideration of Mistral AI and Perplexity as possible targets.
- Reported advocacy for a larger deal from Eddy Cue.
- Reported resistance from Federighi and other executives who favored internal development.
- Banker approaches concerning a major AI acquisition.
What it does not support
- A signed purchase agreement or completed transaction.
- A confirmed Apple bid or formal negotiations with either company.
- A decision by Apple to choose Perplexity over Mistral.
- A commitment by either target to be acquired.
How well was the report verified?
Reuters reported that it could not independently verify The Information’s account. Perplexity said it was unaware of merger discussions involving the company, apart from its own acquisitions. Apple and Mistral did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
Perplexity’s statement is narrower than a categorical denial of every past contact: it addressed the company’s awareness of merger discussions. The defensible description remains “Apple reportedly discussed whether to acquire” the companies, not “Apple is buying” either one.
Mistral and Perplexity would solve different Apple problems
| Company | What Apple would primarily acquire | Potential strategic use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mistral AI | Foundation-model technology, model weights and AI researchers | More control over model development and less dependence on external providers | Model capability alone would not fix Siri’s product execution, infrastructure or integration |
| Perplexity | AI search, retrieval, citations and a consumer answer product | A hedge against search disruption and a route to conversational discovery on Apple platforms | It would not automatically provide a leading foundation model, Google-scale index or Apple-grade operating-system integration |
Why Apple might have considered Mistral
Mistral was founded in Paris in 2023 and became one of Europe’s most prominent AI startups. Reuters’ account said Mistral was valued at more than $6 billion after its Series B. It also relayed reports that the company was discussing roughly $1 billion in additional financing at an approximately $10 billion valuation in August 2025. Those figures describe the 2025 financing environment, not a confirmed price Apple offered and not a current 2026 valuation.
An acquisition could give Apple a European-origin research and engineering team, open-weight model technology and greater control over customization for Apple hardware and private-cloud services. It could also reduce Apple’s reliance on OpenAI, Google or other outside model providers.

Why Mistral would not be an instant Siri fix
- Apple would still need to evaluate models for reliability, safety and latency.
- Training and serving models would require substantial data-center capacity and continuing expense.
- Integration across iOS, macOS, watchOS and Apple services would remain a product and organizational project.
- Researchers and founders could leave after a purchase.
- The Information reported that some people involved did not view Mistral as one of the very top model makers, which could make a multibillion-dollar price harder to justify.
Why Apple might have considered Perplexity
Perplexity combines language-model answers with web search, retrieval and source citations. Its value to Apple would therefore be concentrated in search, discovery and user interaction rather than ownership of a frontier model laboratory.
MacRumors linked the reported interest to uncertainty around Apple’s Google Search arrangement and the possibility that antitrust remedies could affect Google’s default placement or payments on Apple devices. The Google relationship was one potential strategic pressure, not proof that it caused Apple to pursue Perplexity.
Limits of a Perplexity acquisition
- Search quality depends on indexing, retrieval, web access and citation quality, not only on a chat interface.
- Copyright, publisher and web-crawling disputes could create liabilities.
- Perplexity’s model stack can involve third-party models, so buying it would not equal buying a complete frontier-model company.
- Apple would need to preserve or rebuild a fast-moving startup’s product culture inside a tightly controlled organization.
- Regulators could scrutinize Apple using an acquisition to favor its own search service.
Why the build-versus-buy dispute matters
The case for buying
The pro-acquisition view is that Apple’s AI rollout has lagged competitors and that a mature team or consumer product could save years. An acquisition might supply working technology, specialized talent and urgency while Apple integrates the assets into its ecosystem. Reuters also reported that Tim Cook had signaled openness to larger AI-related acquisitions in July 2025, a possible change from Apple’s traditionally cautious approach.
MacRumors reported that Cue had previously supported proposals involving Netflix and Tesla that Cook rejected. That history helps explain why Cue was portrayed as a stronger advocate for a transformational deal, but it does not show that Cook authorized either AI acquisition.

The case for building
Apple’s objections are not only about the purchase price. Acquired AI companies can bring incompatible cultures, duplicated systems and retention problems. Technology can become obsolete quickly, and owning a model company does not guarantee a better consumer assistant. Apple may instead prefer targeted hiring, smaller technology purchases, licensing or partnerships while retaining product control and privacy standards.
The Information cited Apple’s history of internal development and noted that founders from the Laserlike acquisition eventually left. That example illustrates the retention risk without proving that a Mistral or Perplexity deal would fail.
Why the timing was significant
The report arrived as Apple faced pressure over delayed or underwhelming Apple Intelligence and Siri improvements, competition from Google, Samsung and OpenAI, and uncertainty around its Google Search relationship. Frontier AI development was also becoming more expensive and faster-moving, increasing the perceived cost of waiting.
Apple could respond in several ways without buying either target: continue developing its own models, license external systems, acquire smaller teams, reorganize AI leadership or use a hybrid of on-device and cloud-based models. A reported discussion shows that these choices were being debated; it does not identify the eventual answer.

What an acquisition could mean for users and investors
Even a completed deal would not guarantee an immediate Siri overhaul. Apple would have to complete product integration, privacy and security review, infrastructure scaling, operating-system work and regulatory review. It might use a target’s technology behind the scenes rather than retain the target’s consumer brand.
For investors, the central issue is capital allocation and execution: would a multibillion-dollar purchase accelerate useful products faster than Apple’s internal teams and partnerships, and could Apple retain the people who made the target valuable? For users, the practical result could eventually be better writing tools, answers or search, but the 2025 report supplied no launch timetable or feature commitment.
How to read future headlines about this story
- Banker pitch: an adviser suggests a transaction to Apple; this is not evidence that Apple wants to buy.
- Internal discussion: Apple executives debate a target, as reported here.
- Company contact: Apple and a target communicate about a possible transaction.
- Negotiation or bid: the parties discuss terms or Apple makes an offer.
- Definitive agreement: both sides sign a binding deal, subject to conditions.
- Closing: approvals are obtained and ownership changes.
The available reporting supports the first two stages and possibly earlier internal consideration of Perplexity. It does not establish the later stages.

Is Perplexity a replacement for a foundation-model company?
Not necessarily. Perplexity’s principal asset is an AI-search and answer product built around retrieval, web sources and citations; Mistral’s principal value is model technology and research talent.
Would buying either company immediately improve Siri?
No. Apple would still need model evaluation, privacy and security work, infrastructure, operating-system integration and sustained product execution.
