On August 2, 2024, Infibeam Avenues Ltd—now operating as AvenuesAI—agreed to acquire up to 54.10% of Rediff.com India Ltd for up to ₹25 crore in cash. It also agreed to provide a separate interest-bearing loan of up to ₹25 crore.
That means the widely reported “$3 million sale” referred primarily to the equity component. The broader announced financial arrangement could reach ₹50 crore, but the loan was financing for Rediff’s business—not the price paid for its shares.

The transaction in plain English

|---|---|
| Announcement | August 2, 2024 |
| Buyer | Infibeam Avenues Ltd, now AvenuesAI |
| Target | Rediff.com India Ltd |
| Stake | Not more than 54.10% |
| Equity consideration | Up to ₹25 crore in cash |
| Separate financing | Interest-bearing loan of up to ₹25 crore |
| Expected completion | Within 90 days of the agreement, subject to completion requirements |
Infibeam’s regulatory disclosure said Rediff would become its subsidiary after the acquisition. The filing described an agreement to acquire a controlling stake, not a purchase of all Rediff shares. The remaining shares were therefore not part of the initial majority-stake transaction.
Infibeam’s regulatory disclosure set the equity consideration at no more than ₹25 crore and separately described the loan. Mint reported the overall arrangement as ₹50 crore, split between equity and debt.

Why the headline said $3 million
TechCrunch described the deal as a majority-stake acquisition worth up to $3 million. That figure appears to refer to the ₹25 crore equity purchase, converted into dollars and rounded for international coverage.
There are three separate numbers to keep in mind:
- ₹25 crore: the maximum cash consideration for the equity.
- ₹25 crore: a separate interest-bearing loan for Rediff’s business.
- ₹50 crore: the potential combined equity-and-debt commitment.
Calling the transaction a “$3 million purchase of Rediff” is therefore incomplete. The equity price was not the same thing as the company’s total financing, and neither figure necessarily represented a valuation of 100% of Rediff.
Why the price attracted attention
The transaction looked remarkable because Rediff had once been one of India’s best-known internet companies. Founded in 1996, it became an early web portal offering news, email, online commerce and other internet services.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →TechCrunch reported that Rediff was the first Indian internet company to list on Nasdaq in 2000 and that its peak Nasdaq valuation exceeded $600 million. That historical market value and the 2024 transaction price are useful symbols of how the internet economy changed, but they are not directly comparable valuations.
The Nasdaq figure reflected a public-market valuation during the dot-com era. The 2024 deal involved a private-company controlling stake many years later, when Rediff had a different growth profile, business mix and liquidity position. A controlling-stake transaction can also reflect the buyer’s strategic assessment rather than the value of every share in a liquid public market.

For that reason, it would be inaccurate to say that Rediff “was worth only $3 million.” The reported amount was the consideration for a majority stake, not necessarily a full-company valuation or a formal measure of how much value the business had lost.
What Rediff was at its peak
Rediff was more than a news website. Its earlier businesses included:

- A broad consumer web portal and news operation.
- Consumer email services.
- E-commerce and related commerce services.
- Enterprise email products.
- Instant messaging and business communication infrastructure.
That combination gave Rediff a recognizable consumer brand as well as technology and customer relationships that could be useful to another internet business. The acquisition disclosure specifically referred to content distribution, email, instant messaging infrastructure and related services.
Rediff’s reported revenue also shows that it remained an operating business, even though it was no longer growing like a major consumer-internet platform. Its turnover was ₹38.24 crore in financial year 2021–22, ₹37.25 crore in 2022–23 and ₹36.07 crore in 2023–24, according to the regulatory filing.
Why Rediff lost ground
The portal model became less powerful as internet use fragmented. Users increasingly went directly to search engines, social networks, messaging applications, mobile platforms and specialist e-commerce services instead of beginning with a general-purpose homepage.

Advertising and audience attention also moved toward much larger global platforms and focused Indian services. Mobile-first usage reduced the importance of a single desktop portal as the main gateway to the internet.
TechCrunch attributed Rediff’s decline to the rise of social media and specialized e-commerce and reported that the company eventually delisted from Nasdaq. The more precise conclusion is not that Rediff had no remaining value. Rather, its brand, audience and infrastructure no longer produced the growth and valuation associated with newer internet businesses.
Why Infibeam wanted Rediff
Infibeam was primarily a payments-infrastructure and fintech company. Its interest in Rediff was therefore strategic: Rediff could provide consumer reach, content distribution, enterprise relationships and technology that Infibeam could connect to its own payments and artificial-intelligence capabilities.
Infibeam described a plan to use Rediff’s audience to distribute financial products such as loans, insurance and investments. The broader idea was to combine:
- Rediff’s content and consumer audience;
- Infibeam’s payments and platform infrastructure;
- Financial-product aggregation and distribution;
- Rediff’s enterprise email and collaboration services; and
- New AI-enabled commerce and business tools.
Infibeam’s own materials promoted Rediff as a large-traffic asset. Its August 2024 press release cited more than 55 million monthly visitors, while the regulatory disclosure separately cited approximately 38 million monthly visitors. These were company-provided figures from different disclosures, not a single independently verified traffic count.

The difference could reflect different definitions, measurement periods, rounding or changes in traffic. It is safest to say that Infibeam presented Rediff as having substantial reach, while acknowledging that its published figures were not consistent.
The founder’s role
Ajit Balakrishnan, Rediff’s chairman and chief executive, said he was passing the brand and its legacy to Infibeam. He also said Rediff would continue to advise the company.
That supports a story of strategic handover and founder transition. It should not automatically be described as a complete founder exit unless separate documentation confirms that interpretation.

Later disclosures changed the ownership picture. AvenuesAI’s financial-report material for financial year 2024–25 said Infibeam had acquired 54% of Rediff in the previous year. It also said Infibeam approved the transfer of its e-commerce platform infrastructure business to Rediff, independently valued at ₹800 crore.
According to that disclosure, the transfer increased Infibeam’s effective stake in Rediff to nearly 82%. This was a later transaction involving a business transfer and should not be added to the original August 2024 equity price. It does, however, show that AvenuesAI came to place considerably more strategic value in Rediff than the initial cash consideration alone might suggest.
AvenuesAI’s 2025–26 announcements page identifies Rediff as a subsidiary and lists a Rediff pre-DRHP filing. A pre-DRHP filing can indicate preparation for a possible public-market transaction, but it does not by itself establish an IPO timetable, valuation, issue size or certainty of listing.
What the transaction really means
Rediff’s story is not simply that a once-famous company was sold cheaply. It is a case study in the difference between brand value and standalone growth value.
Rediff retained recognizable branding, reported traffic, revenue, enterprise email customers and internet infrastructure. But the general portal category that once made it strategically central had weakened. Infibeam’s thesis was that those remaining assets could become more valuable when connected to payments, financial-product distribution, commerce and AI.

The acquisition therefore had two layers. Financially, Infibeam agreed to pay up to ₹25 crore for up to 54.10% and separately offered up to ₹25 crore in debt financing. Strategically, it was buying access to an established internet audience and business infrastructure that could be repurposed for a new platform model.
The later move toward nearly 82% ownership and the proposed public-market preparation suggest that AvenuesAI did not view Rediff as merely a declining legacy portal. Whether the combined strategy ultimately creates durable value is a separate question, but the original transaction was clearly more than a simple $3 million cash purchase.
