Reddit did become profitable after its March 2024 stock-market debut, but “for the first time ever” is inaccurate. The company reported $29.9 million in GAAP net income for the third quarter of 2024, alongside 97.2 million average daily active uniques. That was Reddit’s first reported profit as a public company—not its first profitable quarter in history.
By Reddit’s latest reported quarter, ended June 30, 2026, the audience had grown to 130.3 million average daily active uniques, and net income had reached $253 million. The Associated Press later clarified the original “first time ever” wording.

What Reddit reported in Q3 2024
For the quarter ended September 30, 2024, Reddit reported:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Revenue: $348.4 million
- GAAP net income: $29.9 million
- Diluted earnings per share: $0.16
- Average daily active uniques: 97.2 million, up 47% year over year
The profit exceeded analyst expectations, according to the AP’s contemporaneous report. But it was a quarterly result. One profitable quarter does not establish annual profitability or guarantee that every later quarter will also be profitable.

Why “first time ever” is misleading
Reddit had previously reported quarterly profits in the first quarter of 2021 and the fourth quarter of 2023, according to the AP. The accurate description is therefore Reddit’s first post-IPO quarterly profit or first profit as a public company.
“Reddit had never made money” is also too vague unless it specifies the measure. GAAP net income, annual profit, operating cash flow, adjusted EBITDA and free cash flow are different concepts. This article uses GAAP net income for the basic question of whether Reddit was profitable.
What does Reddit mean by “daily users”?
Reddit reports daily active uniques, or DAUq, rather than simply counting registered accounts. Reddit says a DAUq is a user identifiable through a unique identifier who visits a Reddit webpage or opens the app at least once during a 24-hour period. Its quarterly figure is the average of the daily figures during that quarter. Reddit’s results release explains the metric.

That means 97.2 million was an average daily activity measure during Q3 2024—not the number of different people who visited Reddit at any point in the quarter. It is not equivalent to monthly active users, registered accounts, or the number of people posting and commenting. The metric includes web and app activity, and logged-in and logged-out audiences can have different patterns and advertising value.
Reddit’s audience and profit continued to grow
| Period | Average DAUq | Year-over-year growth | GAAP net income |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q3 2024 | 97.2 million | 47% | $29.9 million |
| Q4 2024 | 101.7 million | 39% | $71 million |
| Q2 2025 | 110.4 million | 21% | $89 million |
| Q3 2025 | 116.0 million | 19% | $163 million |
| Q4 2025 | 121.4 million | 19% | $252 million |
| Q1 2026 | 126.8 million | 17% | $204 million |
| Q2 2026 | 130.3 million | 18% | $253 million |

What drove the improvement?
Advertising remained the core business
Advertising is still Reddit’s main revenue engine. Advertising revenue reached $465 million of $500 million total revenue in Q2 2025, $549 million of $585 million in Q3 2025, and $625 million of $663 million in Q1 2026.
Rank #3
Reddit attributed the expansion to more ad impressions, improved pricing, and stronger performance across geographies and advertising objectives. As the audience grows, the company can potentially sell more inventory; better ad tools and targeting can also increase the value of each impression.

International growth helped expand Reddit’s reach. The AP linked part of the 2024 user increase to an AI-powered translation feature that initially supported English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and German, with additional expansion planned.
The U.S. remains the larger business. In Q3 2025, Reddit reported $480 million in U.S. revenue and $105 million internationally. International revenue can grow quickly from a smaller base, but converting international activity into comparable advertising revenue may take time.
Rank #4
Data licensing and AI-related products
Reddit also signed data-related agreements with Google and OpenAI, which the AP reported were beginning to contribute financially. Data licensing creates a revenue stream separate from advertising.
These developments should not be blended together. Translation and search features may improve discovery and engagement; data licensing monetizes access to content; and advertising AI can support targeting, campaign automation, measurement or conversion optimization. No single AI deal explains Reddit’s profitability, and licensing revenue should not be assumed to be permanent or guaranteed.
Was Reddit’s profitability a one-off?
The results after Q3 2024 point to a broader profitability inflection rather than a single isolated quarter. Reddit reported $89 million of net income in Q2 2025, $163 million in Q3, $252 million in Q4, and $530 million for full-year 2025.

For 2025, Reddit reported $2.2 billion in revenue, a 24% net margin, $845 million in adjusted EBITDA, $691 million in operating cash flow and $684 million in free cash flow. Those measures provide useful context about operating scale, but adjusted EBITDA and cash flow are not substitutes for GAAP net income.
In Q2 2026—the latest available result as of August 18, 2026—Reddit reported a 31% net margin, $343 million in adjusted EBITDA, $262 million in operating cash flow and $261 million in free cash flow, in addition to $253 million of net income. The company’s continued profits and cash generation make the post-IPO turnaround look more durable, although they do not eliminate business risk.
What could still go wrong?
- Advertising cycles: Reddit remains substantially dependent on companies’ willingness to spend on digital advertising.
- Competition: Reddit competes for both user attention and advertising budgets.
- International monetization: Rapid international user growth may not translate into equally rapid revenue growth.
- Community health: Aggressive advertising or product changes could damage the volunteer-moderated communities that generate much of Reddit’s value.
- AI uncertainty: Data licensing arrangements and AI-driven improvements may change, expire or contribute less than expected.
- Measurement limits: Rising DAUq is positive, but user composition, engagement quality and monetization per user matter too.
Reddit’s 2025 annual filing identifies risks including competition for advertising budgets and user engagement. Profitability is evidence of progress, not a guarantee of permanent earnings.
