Short answer: Discord’s IPO plans appear more advanced than they did in 2025, but the company has not publicly confirmed a 2026 listing date, exchange, valuation, price range, or offering terms. Bloomberg reported on January 6, 2026, that Discord had confidentially filed for a U.S. IPO. That is a meaningful step—but it is not the same as a completed or scheduled IPO.
The original claim that Discord was “planning an IPO this year” came from a March 27, 2025 report, where “this year” meant 2025. The newer story is the reported confidential filing, while the larger changes already visible at Discord involve advertising, subscriptions, rewards, commerce, developer payments, and safety controls.

- April 23–28, 2025: Discord announced that Humam Sakhnini would become CEO on April 28. Co-founder Jason Citron moved to the board and became an adviser to the CEO, while co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy remained CTO. Discord identified Sakhnini’s background and transition.
- January 6, 2026: Bloomberg reported that Discord had confidentially filed for a U.S. IPO and was working with Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase. Bloomberg also reported that Discord had more than 200 million monthly users. Bloomberg’s report cited people familiar with the matter.
As of August 18, 2026, no publicly verified offering date, price range, exchange listing, share count, valuation, or public S-1 registration statement is established by the evidence available for this article. The SEC’s EDGAR search is the place to check for a public filing.

What a confidential IPO filing actually means
A confidential filing lets a private company work through the Securities and Exchange Commission’s review process before making its registration statement public. It is more concrete than hiring investment banks or discussing an IPO, but it does not guarantee that the offering will happen.
Discord could still revise the filing, delay the deal, or abandon it. A confidential filing also does not tell the public whether the company is profitable, how quickly revenue is growing, how much cash it has, or what valuation it might seek.
Those details generally become assessable only when a public registration statement is released and the company begins marketing the offering. Investors would then be able to examine revenue, losses, cash flow, debt, stock-based compensation, user metrics, legal risks, and share-voting arrangements.
Why the CEO change matters—but does not prove an IPO is imminent
Sakhnini previously held senior roles at Activision Blizzard and King, giving him experience with large gaming businesses. Operationally, appointing an executive with that background could help Discord scale its gaming relationships, revenue systems, and commercial operations.
It could also be consistent with preparing for the discipline of public markets: clearer financial reporting, predictable growth, stronger cost controls, and a more formal management structure. But that is an interpretation, not a confirmed explanation for the appointment.
In an April 2025 message, Citron said Sakhnini would lead Discord through its next growth phase and referred to “someday” becoming a public company. That language expressed a long-term ambition, not a promised 2026 listing. Discord’s announcement did not guarantee an IPO date.

Discord is broadening how it makes money
The clearest evidence of change is not a confirmed IPO timetable. It is Discord’s widening monetization strategy. The company still has a free communication product and optional subscriptions, but it is building additional ways to earn money from users, advertisers, game publishers, and developers.
Nitro subscriptions
Discord Nitro remains the most direct subscription product. Discord says Nitro includes benefits such as premium customization, HD streaming, larger file uploads, and two Server Boosts, with features varying by plan. Nitro and Nitro Basic are offered on monthly and annual billing options. Discord’s support documentation explains the plans.
There is no single universal Nitro price that applies to every user. Discord says pricing can vary by country and may be reviewed based on local market conditions, exchange rates, and operating costs. Users should check the live checkout screen rather than rely on an old U.S. price quoted elsewhere. Discord explains its localized pricing policy.
For investors, Nitro creates recurring revenue. For users, the risk is that public-market expectations could encourage higher prices, more aggressive upselling, or a wider gap between free and paid features. There is currently no evidence that Discord plans to put ordinary text or voice chat behind a paywall.
Advertising, Quests, and Orbs
Discord introduced its first mobile advertising format in March 2025 and later announced another format and measurement partnerships with AppsFlyer and Gamesight. Its advertising products include sponsored Quests and game-related promotions rather than evidence of conventional ads inserted into private conversations. Discord’s newsroom lists its advertising and product announcements.

Discord also says it introduced Orbs in summer 2025. Users can earn Orbs through Quests and exchange them for profile customization or, in some cases, Nitro-related benefits.
The commercial logic is straightforward: advertisers pay to reach gaming communities, users receive rewards for completing promotional activities, and Discord gets a measurable advertising product. The trade-off is user experience. Sponsored tasks may feel useful to some players and intrusive to others, particularly when commercial content appears inside community-oriented spaces.
Nitro Rewards
In 2026, Discord launched Nitro Rewards, a partner-benefits program for eligible Nitro members. Offers can include gaming benefits and discounts, but availability varies by region and the program can change over time. Nitro Basic and Nitro Classic members are excluded according to Discord’s support page.
This makes Nitro more than a bundle of Discord-only features: it becomes a broader membership product. That could improve retention and perceived value, but it also means members may see different offers depending on geography, eligibility, and third-party terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommerce and game sales
Discord says it piloted Social Commerce with Marvel Rivals, allowing developers to sell in-game items to players with linked game accounts through official Discord servers and other Discord surfaces. Discord’s company history describes the initiative.
Commerce could give Discord transaction revenue and deepen its role in gaming distribution. However, a pilot or product announcement does not establish the program’s adoption, revenue, take rate, or profitability. Those are precisely the figures investors would need to see in a public filing.
Developer monetization
Discord’s Premium Apps system allows eligible bots and Activities to sell subscriptions and one-time purchases inside Discord. Discord handles elements such as billing, fraud detection, and receipts, while developers control access to paid features. The developer documentation explains Premium Apps monetization.
This gives Discord a platform-style opportunity: developers can build businesses inside Discord, while Discord can potentially earn from transactions and keep users inside its ecosystem. The cost for developers is dependence on Discord’s rules, review procedures, payment terms, and distribution decisions.

If Discord continues along this path, users could see:
- more sponsored Quests and branded gaming activations;
- stronger promotion of Nitro and changes to subscription benefits;
- partner discounts and gaming perks attached to eligible Nitro plans;
- more purchases through Discord’s Shop and game integrations;
- additional age checks or age-gated access controls;
- more formal app discovery, review, and monetization systems; and
- regional or channel-specific changes to pricing and promotions.
Some of these changes already exist; others are reasonable possibilities rather than announced IPO requirements. An IPO would not automatically change the free product on its first trading day. Public-market pressure could instead show up gradually through subscription conversion targets, advertising growth, commerce expansion, cost controls, and changes to the visibility of commercial features.
Discord has also announced a global teen-default experience and delayed the global rollout of age assurance to the second half of 2026. These measures may affect access to age-restricted spaces, but they do not necessarily mean every user must upload government identification. Discord’s safety announcement contains the company’s stated approach.
How large is Discord?
Discord says it had more than 90 million daily active users based on internal data from the fourth quarter of 2025. Discord also says more than 90% of its users play video games, according to a 2025 user survey. Bloomberg separately reported more than 200 million monthly users in December 2025.
These figures should not be added together or compared as if they were interchangeable. Daily active users and monthly users measure different things, come from different periods, and may use different definitions. They are company-supplied figures, not the audited public-company disclosures investors would expect after an IPO. Discord’s newsroom provides its stated metrics.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What investors should look for in a public filing
A public S-1 or equivalent registration statement would be the most important next development. It should help answer questions that cannot currently be answered responsibly:
- How much revenue comes from Nitro subscriptions?
- How many paying subscribers does Discord have, and what is its conversion rate?
- What are average revenue per user and subscriber retention?
- How much revenue comes from advertising, Quests, commerce, and developer fees?
- Is Discord profitable or generating positive free cash flow?
- How expensive are infrastructure, video, storage, moderation, and safety systems?
- How much stock-based compensation and dilution should shareholders expect?
- How dependent is Discord on gamers, app stores, payment processors, and major platforms?
- What privacy, child-safety, cybersecurity, litigation, and regulatory risks does it identify?
- Will founders or other early shareholders retain special voting rights?
Until those disclosures appear, reported IPO activity is a signal of intent—not an investment opportunity. Retail investors cannot buy ordinary Discord shares on a public exchange merely because the company has reportedly filed confidentially.
What could go wrong?
User backlash
Discord’s value depends on communities continuing to use it. Too many sponsored activities, intrusive commercial surfaces, or aggressive subscription prompts could weaken trust and engagement.

A large user base does not automatically produce strong subscription revenue. Investors would need to know how many users pay, how long they remain subscribed, and whether price increases reduce retention.
High operating costs
Voice, video, storage, moderation, trust and safety, and customer support can be expensive at Discord’s scale. Without financial statements, outsiders cannot determine whether growth translates into sustainable margins.
Advertising and commerce risk
Advertiser demand can fluctuate, while commerce adds payment disputes, fraud, digital-goods, platform, and regulatory responsibilities. Game-related initiatives may also depend heavily on publishers and the broader gaming market.
Concentration and competition
Discord’s gaming strength is an advantage, but concentration can become a risk if user behavior changes or competitors offer better integrated communities, messaging, gaming, or workplace tools. The relevant question is not whether Discord has competitors, but whether it can retain users and pricing power while expanding beyond its core audience.

How to tell whether the IPO is really progressing
Readers should look for concrete milestones rather than repeating anonymous-source headlines:
- A public SEC registration statement.
- A named exchange and expected ticker.
- An estimated share count and price range.
- Multi-year financial statements and updated user metrics.
- Public confirmation from Discord.
- Underwriter and syndicate details.
- An investor presentation or roadshow.
- A final pricing date and first trading date.
Until those milestones appear, “Discord is going public in 2026” is too definite. “Discord reportedly filed confidentially for an IPO” is the more accurate description.
