Reddit announced on March 29, 2021, that it was opening its first Canadian office on University Avenue in Toronto. The company said the local operation would bring together management, sales, community and engineering teams to support Canadian communities and advertisers.
Where and when Reddit opened its Canadian office
Reddit’s March 29, 2021 announcement said the company was “opening its doors in Canada” at a Toronto office on University Avenue. Daily Hive reported that same day that the office was opening that Monday, corroborating the date, location and basic announcement.
The planned Toronto operation included management, sales, community and engineering functions. Reddit said its team was already working with local organizations, developing community-engagement programs and serving Canadian brands and marketers.
Why Reddit said it was investing in Canada
Reddit described Canada as its third-largest user base, behind the United States and the United Kingdom, and said Canadian users were growing 40% year over year. Those are figures Reddit gave in its 2021 announcement, not current audience measurements. The company called Canada “the natural next place for Reddit to establish a new, on-the-ground presence.”

The local office was also intended to help advertisers connect with Canadian audiences. Reddit named Tim Hortons, Lenovo, General Mills, CDW and Call of Duty: Mobile as brands already working with its Canadian team. It highlighted a Tim Hortons campaign aimed at r/hockey to promote the NHL Hockey Challenge app. The announcement presented the campaign as an example of community-focused marketing; it did not provide independently audited performance results.
What Reddit reported one year later
In an April 7, 2022 retrospective, Reddit said its Canadian operation had grown to more than 60 employees in the 12 months after opening. The company described the workforce as spanning Product, Engineering, Community and Sales. It also reported that r/PersonalFinanceCanada grew 34% in 2021. These are Reddit’s historical, self-reported figures.

That retrospective quoted Reddit Canada Country Manager RJ Pauloski saying, “Canadians are continuing to find communities and dive deeper into their interests on Reddit.”

The opening marked a local expansion of Reddit’s presence in Canada, with teams intended to support both users and advertisers. It does not establish whether the University Avenue office remains open, how many people work for Reddit in Canada today, or the company’s current Canadian audience size. The cited announcements report the company’s plans and historical figures, not its present-day office or staffing status.
