Redbox’s Owner Filed for Chapter 11, Then Chapter 7: What Happened

Redbox’s owner first filed for Chapter 11 in June 2024. The court converted the cases to Chapter 7 liquidation on July 10, amid financial distress tied to debt, content-rights problems and falling revenue.

Redbox’s owner was Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 2024; the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware converted the cases to Chapter 7 liquidation on July 10, 2024. Redbox entities were among the debtors. The distinction matters: the filing was not Chapter 7 from the start.

Who owned Redbox?

Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment owned the Redbox business and operated it alongside services including Crackle and Chicken Soup for the Soul. The entertainment company is distinct from Chicken Soup for the Soul, LLC, the publisher of the book series. The bankruptcy petition identifies the publishing company separately as the entertainment company’s parent.

The bankruptcy court summarized the timeline in its 2025 opinion in Skajem v. Rouhana: “The Debtor and several subsidiaries filed for relief under chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code on June 28, 2024. The cases were converted to chapter 7 on July 10, 2024.” Read the court opinion.

What happened in the bankruptcy?

June 2024: Chapter 11 filing

Chapter 11 generally allows a business to seek court-supervised restructuring while it continues operating, though a filing does not guarantee that operations will continue. Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and subsidiaries filed for Chapter 11 on June 28, 2024. Its petition, filed June 29, estimated the Redbox network at approximately 27,000 DVD rental kiosks. July 10, 2024: conversion to Chapter 7

The court converted the cases to Chapter 7, a liquidation proceeding. In Chapter 7, a trustee administers the bankruptcy estate, which may include collecting or selling assets and distributing available proceeds according to bankruptcy law and claim priorities. Conversion does not mean every creditor will be repaid.

Why did the company fail?

The court’s account connects the company’s financial distress to the debt load associated with its 2022 acquisition of Redbox, problems maintaining content rights, and declining revenue, cash flow and liquidity. The court wrote, “Thereafter, the Debtor was unable to service its larger debt load.” This is the court’s description of the company’s circumstances, not proof that any single factor alone caused the bankruptcy.

What happened to Redbox kiosks?

The filings give different approximate kiosk counts at different points in the case. Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment’s June 2024 petition estimated approximately 27,000 kiosks. In an October 1, 2024 motion, creditor Bungalow Media + Entertainment referred to approximately 24,000. Those are attributed estimates, not a reconciled final inventory.

In that same October 2024 motion, Bungalow said Redbox was no longer operating and that it saw no apparent distribution channels for the particular film covered by its contract. That statement was made in support of a specific creditor request. It does not establish what happened to every kiosk or prove the status of every Redbox-related service today. The cited filings do not provide a current, location-by-location kiosk inventory.

Is the bankruptcy case over?

No conclusion about the outcome of the latest estate proceedings follows from the available docket snapshot. Inforuptcy’s mirror for case 1:24-bk-11442, accessed October 8, 2026, listed activity through September 29, 2026, including a trustee’s compromise motion and a hearing listed for October 28, 2026. The listing shows that estate proceedings remained active in that snapshot; it does not establish whether the motion was granted or what creditors may ultimately receive. View the docket mirror.
