Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf a text says Apple Pay was used and urges you to call a number, click a link, or share information, treat it as likely phishing or an impersonation scam until you verify it independently. Don’t reply, call, or tap anything in the message. Check Wallet and your card issuer’s official app or website; if a charge is real, contact the issuer using a number you find independently.
What to do right now
- Stop interacting with the text. Don’t call its number, open its link or attachment, scan a QR code, reply, or share a password or code.
- Save a screenshot. Keep it if you need to report the message or explain what happened to your bank.
- Check your records independently. Open Wallet yourself, then check the card issuer’s official app, website, or statement.
- Contact the issuer if you find an unfamiliar charge. Use the phone number on your physical card or the issuer’s independently verified website—not details in the text.
- Report and delete the message. You can forward it to 7726, report it to the FTC, and send an Apple-impersonating text to Apple as described below.
A text message is not proof that a payment occurred. Apple warns that scammers may claim there were unauthorized Apple Pay charges, create urgency, spoof legitimate phone numbers, and try to obtain sign-in credentials, verification codes, device passcodes, or financial information. Apple’s guidance on recognizing social-engineering scams explains these tactics.
How to check whether a transaction is real
On iPhone or Apple Watch
- Open Wallet yourself.
- Tap the debit or credit card mentioned in the text.
- Review recent transactions and tap a transaction for more details.
On Apple Watch, open Wallet, tap the card, and review its recent transactions. Menu details can vary by device and software.
On iPad, Mac with Touch ID, or Apple Vision Pro
Open the device’s Wallet & Apple Pay settings and look for the card’s transactions. The exact labels can vary by device and operating system.

Wallet history may be incomplete or unavailable in some countries. Apple says the card issuer is the most accurate source for a complete transaction record, so check the issuer’s app, website, or statement even if Wallet shows nothing. Apple’s transaction-history instructions cover device steps and this limitation.
If you find an unfamiliar charge
For a debit or credit card used with Apple Pay, contact the bank or card issuer that issued the card. Apple Pay is not a bank; the issuer handles the card account and is generally the right place to report and dispute an unauthorized card transaction.

- Say the transaction is unauthorized and appears connected to Apple Pay or a digital wallet.
- Mention the suspicious text and any information you shared with its sender.
- Ask whether to freeze or replace the card, remove it from digital wallets, and dispute the charge.
- Review pending as well as completed activity, and follow the issuer’s instructions for monitoring the account.
Some transactions may show a temporary authorization or an amount that changes before the final charge—for example, a restaurant tip adjustment or a gas-station hold. Ask the issuer about a confusing entry before treating an unfamiliar-looking amount as confirmed fraud. Whether a charge can be reversed depends on the issuer, card network, transaction, and applicable rules; a refund is not guaranteed.
If someone else may have had access to the card, check with authorized users or family members before reporting a purchase as unauthorized. If the text refers to an App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, or other Apple Services charge, check Apple’s guidance for identifying App Store or iTunes Store messages and review Apple purchase history rather than assuming it is an Apple Pay card purchase.

Apple Pay, Apple Cash, Apple Card, and Apple Services are different
- Apple Pay: A way to pay with eligible debit and credit cards in Wallet. For an unrecognized card purchase, start with the card issuer.
- Apple Cash: A separate U.S. stored-balance and person-to-person payment service. For an unfamiliar Apple Cash transaction, follow Apple’s Apple Cash transaction guidance and contact the Apple Cash Specialist through the contact details on that current page. Apple lists 877-233-8552 there; verify the number on Apple’s page rather than relying on an unsolicited text.
- Apple Card: Use the Apple Card account interface or its issuer’s official support process for an Apple Card transaction. It is not automatically handled as a generic Apple Pay dispute.
- Apple Services: Charges for services such as the App Store, iCloud, or Apple Music should be checked in Apple purchase history and handled through Apple’s official billing or refund channels.
If an Apple Cash payment is pending
In Wallet, tap the Apple Cash card, tap the transaction, tap it again on the next screen, then choose Cancel Payment. Apple says this cancellation option applies to a pending payment; a completed payment cannot be canceled through that process. An Apple Cash person-to-person payment may draw from a debit card in Wallet if the Apple Cash balance is insufficient, so check both records if you are tracing a payment.
Warning signs in an Apple Pay text
- It creates panic with claims like “act now,” “the account will be charged,” or “the transaction cannot be reversed.”
- It tells you to call a number or use a link supplied in the message to cancel a charge or claim a refund.
- It asks for an Apple Account password, two-factor authentication code, device passcode, full card number, CVV, Social Security number, bank login, or a transfer.
- It asks you to buy gift cards, install remote-access software, or move money to “protect” it.
- The sender, link, or phone number looks unusual, or the message contains a transaction you cannot find through official records.
A sender name, caller ID, or personal detail in the text does not establish that it is genuine. Apple cautions that scammers can spoof phone numbers and use personal information to gain trust. Don’t rely on branding, a convincing caller, or a message that appears to name a real transaction; verify through an app or contact channel you open yourself.

If you already clicked, called, or shared information
You clicked a link but entered nothing
Close the page, don’t download or install anything, and delete the message after saving a screenshot if you plan to report it. Check for unexpected account notifications or device behavior and install normal software updates. Clicking alone does not establish that your phone or account was compromised; risk depends on what happened on the page and whether you entered information, downloaded software, or granted access.
You gave an Apple Account password or verification code
Change your Apple Account password immediately using Settings or Apple’s account-management page opened independently. Change it anywhere else you reused it. Review trusted devices, account details, and recent activity, and confirm two-factor authentication is enabled. Unfamiliar sign-ins, unrequested verification codes, unknown trusted devices, changed account details, or purchases you do not recognize can indicate a problem. See Apple’s steps for a possibly compromised Apple Account; if you cannot regain control, contact Apple through official support.

You gave card, bank, or identity information
Call your bank or card issuer immediately using an official contact method. Tell them what was exposed and ask whether to freeze or replace the card, change banking credentials, and monitor or dispute activity. If you shared a Social Security number or other identity information, use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery guidance. The FTC also outlines next steps in What To Do if You Were Scammed.
You called the number or installed remote-access software
End the call and do not call back. Contact your bank or card issuer independently, explain what the caller asked you to do, and change any information you disclosed. If you installed software or gave someone device access, disconnect from the interaction and seek help through the device maker’s or software provider’s official support channel; tell your financial institutions if you used the device to access accounts while it was under someone else’s control. Report any transfer, gift-card purchase, or other loss promptly to the institution involved and the FTC.
How to report the text
- Apple: If the message appears to be from Apple, email a screenshot to [email protected].
- Your mobile carrier: Forward the text to 7726, which spells “SPAM.” The FTC explains this and other steps in its guides to reporting spam text messages and avoiding phishing scams.
- FTC: Report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Financial institution: Report an actual unauthorized transaction or exposed account details directly to the bank, card issuer, or Apple Cash support route that applies.
After reporting, delete and block the message. If you do not use Apple Pay, the text is especially suspicious, but still check your bank and card accounts in case it refers vaguely to a card or Apple Account.
