Rec Room announced on August 25, 2025, that it was laying off roughly half its staff. The company’s founders described the move as a financial necessity and said Rec Room would narrow its focus to PC and VR creators, its own games, and curated events. The company later announced that its service would close on June 1, 2026; that scheduled shutdown date has passed.
What happened at Rec Room in August 2025?
Co-founders Cameron Brown and Nick Fajt announced the layoffs on August 25, 2025. They described the decision as a response to the company’s financial trajectory, not a judgment about the performance of the employees affected. In the announcement, they called it “a business necessity based on the financial trajectory of the company.” GeekWire reported the announcement and the founders’ explanation.
The company said it was cutting roughly half its team. A subsequent GeekWire report said a Washington State Employment Security Department WARN filing listed 141 affected employees. These are related but distinct figures: “roughly half” was the company’s description of the reduction, while 141 is the count in the reported filing. GeekWire also reported that Rec Room had just over 100 employees after the cuts.
As reported by GeekWire from the company’s announcement, affected employees were offered three months of severance pay, six months of health benefits, and the option to keep their laptops or desktop computers. GeekWire’s August 25 report covered those terms.

Why did Rec Room say it was cutting staff?
The founders said Rec Room had become stretched too thin while trying to build a user-generated-content platform for VR, PC, consoles, and mobile. In their assessment, the most engaged creations came from PC and VR players, while expansion on mobile and consoles had not delivered strong results. They also said the volume of lower-quality creations added moderation and infrastructure demands. Those are the company’s stated reasons, not independently established findings about what caused the layoffs.
Brown and Fajt described the strategic bind this way: “Too small to realize the ‘anyone can build anywhere’ vision, but too big to pivot to a more focused experience that was more reactive to what our players wanted and would pay for.” The quote was reported by GeekWire.

What was Rec Room’s plan after the layoffs?
The founders said the company would concentrate on a narrower set of activities rather than keep pursuing equal breadth across platforms. Their stated priorities were:
- Supporting top creators on PC and VR.
- Developing Rec Room Originals, including the in-house game Paintball.
- Running curated monthly events.
That was the plan announced alongside the August 2025 restructuring; it should not be read as evidence that the company achieved a sustainable business model.

How did the August cuts compare with Rec Room’s earlier layoffs and funding?
GeekWire reported an earlier 2025 workforce reduction affecting 16% of Rec Room’s staff. Its reporting also noted that the company raised $100 million in 2021 and a further $145 million later that year at a $3.5 billion valuation. Those are historical fundraising figures; they do not establish Rec Room’s cash position, revenue, or valuation when it announced the layoffs or later closed.

What happened to Rec Room after the layoffs?
On March 30, 2026, Rec Room announced it would close the service on June 1, 2026, at noon Pacific. That date has passed. The company said users would no longer be able to log in and play, its website would go offline, and online Rec Room Studio services would end. The company’s closure notice also described a wind-down of account creation, subscriptions, creator programs, token activity, and monetized user-generated content before the shutdown. In explaining the closure, Rec Room said it had not found a way to make the service sustainably profitable and that costs had overwhelmed revenue. It cited changes in the VR market and broader gaming headwinds as factors that made profitability difficult, and said it chose to wind down while it could do so thoughtfully. These are the company’s explanations; the published statements do not independently establish its financial results or the relative effect of each factor.
Rec Room’s closure announcement also cited more than 150 million players and creators, over half a billion friendships made, 68,000 cumulative years spent in the service, and more than 500 years of play time in each of its top user-created rooms.
