The “preferred bidder” and exclusivity reports referred to an earlier stage of the sale, not a deal still awaiting completion. Ruben Selles was part of Reading’s earlier story, but the available official club material does not establish a role for him in the takeover.
Has Reading FC been taken over?
Yes. BBC Sport reported on 14 May 2025 that the acquisition had completed and received English Football League (EFL) clearance. The club statement cited in that report said Redwood Holdings Limited acquired all of Reading Football Club’s shareholding, along with Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Ground. BBC Sport’s report of the completed deal.
Reading had announced the sale in principle to Redwood on 3 May 2025. The club described Redwood as a subsidiary of Dogwood Football LLC, owned by Rob Couhig and Todd Trosclair. That announcement was an agreement in principle; completion and EFL clearance followed later in May. Reading FC’s 3 May statement.

By 27 March 2025, the club said exclusivity was still in place. It did not identify the prospective purchaser in that update either. The purchaser became public when Reading announced the sale in principle to Redwood Holdings Limited on 3 May. Accordingly, Redwood was the buyer in the completed transaction; the October statement itself did not name a preferred bidder. Reading FC’s 27 March 2025 update.
What happened to Dai Yongge’s sale of Reading?
The process moved through several distinct stages. An exclusivity agreement meant a potential purchaser had a period to pursue the transaction; it did not itself transfer ownership. The later sale-in-principle announcement and completed acquisition marked different milestones.

Why did the sale matter to Reading supporters?
The sale followed years of documented financial and regulatory problems during Dai Yongge’s ownership. In January 2024, the EFL said Dai had missed a deadline to fund the deposit account, which was intended to cover player and staff salaries. It announced a further £50,000 fine, taking the total to £80,000 at that point. The EFL said he had been in default for nearly four months. EFL statement, 15 January 2024.
Reading’s October 2024 statement separately attributed an EFL registration embargo to the late filing of the 2022–23 accounts. In March 2025, the club said submitting those accounts had lifted that related embargo. These were specific issues tied to the stated dates and causes, not evidence that every restriction the club faced had the same origin. October 2024 club statement; March 2025 club update.

Selles is relevant as a figure from Reading’s earlier managerial period, not as the buyer or a documented negotiator in the transaction. Official club material from October 2025 names Noel Hunt as manager and refers to Selles as someone Couhig knew through his association with Reading. It does not establish Selles’s exact departure date or any role in the takeover negotiations. Reading FC news archive, October 2025.

Rob Couhig later rejected speculation about selling the training ground and downgrading the academy. BBC Sport quoted the Reading chairman on 2 January 2026 saying, “I want to be absolutely clear with you: those claims are categorically untrue.” That denial concerned the speculation described in that report; it was not a new takeover announcement.
