On 9 April 2025, Reading FC said an earlier exclusivity period with a prospective buyer had expired and that it was in advanced talks with an unnamed alternative bidder. The EFL’s deadline for owner Dai Yongge to sell was 22 April—13 days away, according to BBC Sport. The deadline is no longer pending: Redwood Holdings Limited’s takeover was reported completed on 14 May 2025.

What changed on 9 April 2025?

Reading announced that its previous exclusivity arrangement with a potential purchaser had ended and that discussions with an alternative bidder were progressing. The club said negotiations were proceeding professionally and positively, with the need to conclude a sale recognized by all parties. BBC Sport reported that wages would be paid in full in the meantime. (BBC Sport, 9 April 2025)

The EFL deadline for Yongge to sell had been extended from 5 April to 22 April. On 9 April, BBC Sport described 13 days as remaining. Reading said it expected to meet the deadline. That was the position at the time, not a current deadline.

Who was the alternative bidder?

Reading did not name the alternative bidder in its 9 April statement. BBC Radio Berkshire commentator Tim Dellor inferred that the bidder was likely Rob Couhig; that was contemporaneous commentary, not confirmation by the club at that stage. The later announcement identified Redwood Holdings Limited as the buyer, in a deal associated with Couhig and Todd Trosclair.

How the takeover moved from talks to completion

Date Stage What was established
9 April 2025 Talks with an alternative bidder The earlier exclusivity period had expired. Reading said discussions with an unnamed bidder were advanced; the EFL deadline was 22 April. (BBC Sport)
3 May 2025 Sale agreed in principle Reading named Redwood Holdings Limited. The announced transaction covered the club, Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Ground. Formal completion still depended on final legal technicalities. (BBC Sport; Reading FC)
3 May 2025 EFL deadline extension The EFL extended the divestment deadline to its next board meeting on 8 May. (BBC Sport; Reading FC)
14 May 2025 Completion reported Redwood was reported to have acquired 100% of the club’s shareholding, ending Yongge’s involvement; Couhig was confirmed as chairman. (Hob Nob Anyone?)

Why the 3 May announcement was not the finish line

A sale agreed in principle and a completed transfer are different stages. Reading’s 3 May statement said formal completion remained subject to final legal technicalities and was expected shortly. The EFL’s extension to 8 May gave the process additional time; it did not itself establish that the transaction had completed. The later report dated 14 May said the shareholding transfer had completed.

What the takeover followed

BBC Sport reported that Reading had incurred 18 points in deductions under Yongge’s ownership, including a six-point deduction in the previous season. These are historical sanctions described in the May 2025 coverage, not a statement of the club’s current league position. (BBC Sport, 3 May 2025)

What is known about ownership now?

The cited reports establish that Redwood’s acquisition completed in May 2025 and that Couhig became chairman. They do not establish whether ownership changed again after that date, so the completion report should not be read as confirmation of the club’s ownership at a later date.
