On June 6, 2025, the Monetary Policy Committee cut the rate by 50 basis points, from 6.00% to 5.50%, with immediate effect. That decision does not, by itself, show that fixed-deposit returns increased: bank deposit rates are set by individual banks, and the available RBI data do not establish an automatic or immediate pass-through to savers.
What the RBI decided in June 2025
The Reserve Bank of India’s June 6, 2025 liquidity adjustment facility circular records a 50-basis-point cut in the policy repo rate, from 6.00% to 5.50%, effective immediately. It also set the standing deposit facility (SDF) rate at 5.25% and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate at 5.75%. RBI’s circular therefore contradicts the claim that the MPC raised the repo rate by 25 basis points.
The RBI’s Weekly Statistical Supplement dated June 13, 2025, records the repo rate at 5.50% for the week ended June 6, 2025, consistent with the circular. The weekly supplement provides a dated confirmation of that policy rate.
Is 5.50% the current repo rate?
No conclusion about the rate on October 7, 2026 follows from the June 2025 decision. The RBI reports a policy repo rate of 5.25% as of 1:00 p.m. on July 24, 2026, but that dated observation does not verify the rate on October 7, 2026. Check the RBI’s dated policy-rate information for the publication date before describing a rate as current.

Does a repo-rate cut boost fixed-deposit returns?
Not necessarily. The June 2025 policy decision establishes a change in the RBI’s policy rate; it does not establish that banks increased fixed-deposit rates, or that any change was immediate or caused by that decision. A saver should rely on the dated terms offered by the bank for the specific deposit rather than infer a return from the repo rate.
For historical context only, the RBI’s rates page dated July 11, 2025 reported an aggregate term-deposit rate range of 5.85%–6.70% for maturities greater than one year. That RBI range is not a live comparison of individual banks and is not a current offer or guaranteed return.

What to compare before opening a fixed deposit
Compare offers using the bank’s dated terms and the details that affect the return and access to your money:
- Tenure: Match the deposit term to when you may need the funds; rates and available terms can vary by maturity.
- Quoted rate and eligibility: Confirm the rate for your customer category and deposit amount, including any eligibility conditions.
- Payout structure: Check whether interest is paid periodically or at maturity, and how the bank describes the return.
- Premature withdrawal: Read the bank’s rules and any rate adjustment or penalty that applies if you close the deposit early.
- Tax treatment: Consider the tax consequences applicable to you when comparing net returns.
Verify these points directly in the bank’s current deposit terms; the RBI aggregate range above cannot substitute for a bank-specific quote.
