Ether Beat Bitcoin in Q3 2026—but Its Near-Price Order-Book Depth Thinned

Ether outperformed Bitcoin in Q3 2026, but CoinGecko’s eight-exchange study found its near-price order-book depth had fallen relative to Bitcoin’s.

Ether gained 70% in Q3 2026, beating Bitcoin’s 42% rise, according to CoinDesk. But CoinGecko’s study of eight centralized exchanges found that Ether had much less buy and sell order-book depth near its market price relative to Bitcoin than it did in 2025. The figures describe two different things: a strong price return does not mean the market can absorb large trades with little price impact.

How Ether outperformed while its liquidity weakened

Price performance measures how much an asset’s price changed over a period. Order-book depth measures the value of resting buy and sell orders close to the current price. Ether could therefore rally faster than Bitcoin while having a thinner nearby order book relative to Bitcoin: the first is a record of price movement, the second a snapshot of potential trading capacity.

CoinDesk reported that Ether rose 70% during Q3 2026, compared with Bitcoin’s 42%. Separately, CoinGecko’s report, updated September 30, 2026, put Ether’s median depth around the 0.15% price level at $13 million–$14 million—about 35%–45% of Bitcoin’s comparable depth. CoinGecko said Ether had represented at least 60% of Bitcoin’s order-book size in the comparable 2025 period.

What “thinner liquidity” means for a trade

Depth is the dollar value of orders waiting in the book near the market price. A larger order may consume several of those orders before it is filled. In a thinner book, the same trade can move through more price levels, potentially increasing price impact or slippage. That is a possible execution consequence, not evidence that every Ether trade will be costly or that a particular trade would have moved the market.

Depth is not the same as completed trading volume, market capitalization, or all liquidity available across the crypto market. It reflects resting orders in a specified range and venue sample; it can change as orders are added or withdrawn.

What CoinGecko measured—and what it did not

CoinGecko examined order-book depth on eight selected centralized exchanges, using narrow price bands to compare the capital available close to each asset’s market price. Its Ether-to-Bitcoin comparison cited the 0.15% level, approximately within $3 of ETH’s price and $100 of BTC’s price. This is a comparison of the selected exchanges in that range, not a census of every exchange or a measure of decentralized exchanges, over-the-counter trading, or every intraday condition.

The relative-depth result does not mean Ether had no meaningful nearby orders. CoinGecko said seven of the eight exchanges had more than $1 million of Ether depth on each side at the measured range; MEXC, the outlier, had around $450,000. The report described Ether as “fairly liquid at this range.” Binance had the greatest Ether depth within the cited ±$3 range, followed by Bitget and OKX. CoinGecko noted that Bitget’s depth increases at wider ranges.

Bitcoin and other assets provide context, not a direct ranking

CoinGecko reported Bitcoin median cumulative depth across the same eight exchanges of $29 million on the buy side and $37 million on the sell side, nearly 50% above its prior-year comparison. Binance accounted for 25.3% of measured Bitcoin liquidity, with $7.3 million in bids and $8.3 million in asks. These Bitcoin figures help explain the size of the comparison, but should not be confused with Ether’s $13 million–$14 million median at the cited 0.15% level.

The report also found that SOL depth fell from around $28 million on each side in 2025 to around $20 million in 2026. For XRP, CoinGecko cited close to $18 million in bids and $14 million in asks at a wider 2% range, with overall depth around $30 million. Those SOL and XRP figures use different measurement ranges from the ETH/BTC headline comparison, so they are not like-for-like measures of near-price depth.

What the figures can—and cannot—tell investors

The data show a divergence: Ether’s price rose more than Bitcoin’s in Q3 2026, while its nearby order-book depth was substantially lower relative to Bitcoin than in the comparable 2025 period. The sources do not establish why Ether’s relative depth declined, whether that decline contributed to the rally, or whether prices are likely to reverse. A thinner book can make prices more sensitive to orders, but this snapshot is not a forecast.

For an investor considering a trade, the practical distinction is between direction and execution: a strong past return says where price went over the quarter; depth offers a limited view of how much resting liquidity was available near the price in the sampled venues and range. Neither measure alone determines what will happen next.
