A useful comparison separates six questions instead of producing one misleading score:

- Pricing and value (20%): item price plus shipping, tax, membership, required accessories, financing and protection-plan costs.
- Returns and purchase protection (20%): deadline, restocking fee, return shipping, marketplace exclusions and dead-on-arrival handling.
- Warranty and support (15%): manufacturer coverage, retailer service, repair turnaround and local help.
- Trust and seller transparency (15%): first-party versus marketplace fulfillment, authenticity, condition grading and documentation.
- Convenience (10%): store footprint, delivery, pickup, website, payment and installation.
Consumer Reports says online shoppers in its surveys were generally more satisfied overall, while in-person shoppers tended to be happier with returns and exchanges: Consumer Reports electronics-store guidance. Treat every recommendation below as a category fit, not proof that one company is cheapest.

Retailer-by-retailer guide
Micro Center: best for PC enthusiasts near a store
Micro Center is the natural first stop for CPUs, GPUs, memory, storage, motherboards, cases, prebuilts and custom builds when a location is reasonably close. Local stock, bundle promotions, build assistance and the ability to exchange a part in person can outweigh a small online price difference.
- Best for: builders, gaming-PC shoppers and urgent parts purchases.
- Check carefully: store-specific inventory, component return rules and whether a prebuilt uses standard or proprietary parts.
- Limit: its physical footprint is limited; online shoppers who must mail returns lose much of the advantage.
B&H Photo Video: best online specialist
B&H is especially relevant for cameras, lenses, lighting, video, pro audio and specialist peripherals, with computers available as part of that catalog. Its value is product depth and knowledgeable positioning rather than always having the lowest laptop price.
- Read the exact item’s return exclusions before opening it.
- Confirm included batteries, chargers, regional versions and warranty handling.
- Use B&H as a specialist benchmark when comparing a general retailer’s camera or creator bundle.
Costco: best for members prioritizing value and returns
Costco says computers and several electronics categories must be returned within 90 days of the member receiving them; it also offers technical support for many covered products. Policy details are at Costco’s electronics return policy. Costco explicitly does not price-match other retailers (Costco’s price-match answer).
Compare the member-only price with the cost of membership, tax, shipping and the exact configuration. Selection is narrower than at a specialist, and a broad satisfaction guarantee is not an indefinite electronics return.
Best Buy: best nationwide physical option
Best Buy combines store pickup, demonstrations, installation and a price-match program. Its policy page, effective February 23, 2026, lists 15 days for most products for standard customers and 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members, with category exceptions. Some activatable devices carry a $45 fee and specified categories have 15% restocking fees: Best Buy return and exchange policy.

Best Buy’s qualified competitors include Amazon, Apple, B&H, Costco, Crutchfield, Micro Center, Target and Walmart, but third-party marketplace offers are excluded. Requests can be made at purchase or during the return period, subject to conditions; the price-match page shows an effective date of January 16, 2026: qualified competitors and price-match terms.
Amazon: best convenience, highest seller-diligence requirement
Amazon’s range and delivery are excellent for common laptops, components, cables and accessories. The listing is not the supply chain, however. Before paying, inspect “Sold by” and “Shipped by,” condition, return address, seller history, manufacturer warranty and whether the serial number and proof of purchase will be accepted.

Crutchfield: best when compatibility is the product
Crutchfield is a strong choice for car audio, home audio and installation-sensitive purchases. Its service and fit guidance can prevent an expensive mismatch. It may not win a raw-price comparison, but avoiding the wrong harness, receiver or speaker can make the total cost lower.
Newegg and Walmart: useful comparison sources with marketplace caveats
Newegg is valuable for broad component catalogs and promotions; Walmart is useful for budget computers, accessories and pickup. On both sites, separate first-party inventory from Marketplace listings and compare seller warranty and return terms. A trusted domain does not make every seller on it equivalent.

Manufacturer-direct stores
Dell, Lenovo and HP are useful for exact business, workstation and gaming configurations; Apple is the clearest route to the full Mac, iPad and iPhone range; Microsoft specializes in Surface; ASUS and Acer offer additional direct configurations. Direct buying gives a clear manufacturer relationship, but sales, delivery estimates, support tiers and returns vary. Compare the exact CPU, display, memory, storage and warranty rather than the family name.
Choose by product category
Laptops
Compare screen brightness and resolution, panel type, RAM expandability, SSD replacement, battery capacity, webcam, weight, charger, keyboard layout and warranty region. Retailer-exclusive configurations can look identical while using different displays, memory or processors. Check the opened-software and activated-device return rule before setup.
Desktop and gaming PCs
Record the exact CPU and GPU, power-supply brand and wattage, RAM arrangement, SSD type, cooling, motherboard, airflow and upgrade access. A low price can conceal a single memory stick, weak cooling, an undersized or proprietary power supply, or an unlisted motherboard.
Components
Prioritize authentic sealed packaging, protected shipping, dead-on-arrival handling and the rules for GPU returns, CPU socket or pin damage and storage failures. Nearby pickup can be worth more than a small online saving.
Macs and Apple devices
Compare Apple direct with Costco, Best Buy, Amazon and B&H on the identical configuration, sale price, AppleCare eligibility, return period, support channel and rewards. A retailer discount is not automatically better if it shortens your inspection window.

TVs, audio, cameras and smart-home equipment
Use Best Buy for pickup, demonstrations and installation; B&H for camera and creator depth; Crutchfield for compatibility and installation; and Amazon or Walmart for common accessories after seller checks. For monitors, test for defects immediately because pixel policies and return deadlines differ by SKU.
Is the cheapest listing really cheapest?
Calculate landed cost:
- item price, shipping and sales tax;
- membership fee or required subscription;
- necessary accessories, installation and setup;
- protection-plan or financing charges;
- return shipping, restocking and oversized-item fees;
- the value of a longer warranty or easier local exchange.

Read the SKU-level return rule
Check special terms for phones, cameras and lenses, drones, custom PCs, clearance, open-box and marketplace items. A short window can erase a discount if you need time to discover a defect.
Price matching has boundaries
Identical model numbers, included accessories, seller identity and availability must usually match. Common exclusions include marketplace sellers, coupons, membership-only prices, clearance, refurbished or open-box goods, flash sales, bundles, doorbusters and pricing errors. Consumer Reports notes that post-purchase adjustments may exist, but windows and competitor definitions vary: price-adjustment guidance.

Consumer Reports cautions that many electronics plans may not justify their cost, while noting that computer buyers purchase coverage more often than some other electronics shoppers: warranty guidance. Compare the manufacturer warranty, accidental-damage coverage, battery treatment, deductible, repair-versus-replace promise, credit-card purchase protection and homeowner or renter coverage. A plan can make more sense for an expensive laptop carried daily than for a low-cost monitor.

Buying refurbished or open-box
“Renewed” is not a universal standard. Identify who performed the work, the cosmetic grade, battery-health guarantee, included accessories, warranty length, return window, account or carrier lock status and whether the original manufacturer will service it. Consumer Reports notes that coverage differs by seller and that Amazon Renewed Premium can have different protection from ordinary renewed products: refurbished-electronics guidance.
Manufacturer-certified programs and clearly graded refurb marketplaces can be worthwhile for older business laptops, but compare condition-adjusted value with a new model rather than comparing sticker prices alone.
Listing and delivery checklist
- Copy the exact model number and full specification.
- Record “Sold by” and “Shipped by,” seller rating and return address.
- Confirm new, open-box, used or refurbished condition.
- Read manufacturer-warranty eligibility and return exclusions.
- Add shipping, tax, membership and required accessories to the price.
- Check pickup location or delivery date; “in stock” can be store- or ZIP-code-specific.
- Save the invoice, serial number and policy page.
What to do when the package arrives
- Photograph the box, seals and serial number.
- Verify CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, display and included accessories.
- Test ports, keyboard, battery, Wi-Fi, speakers, camera, storage health and performance.
- Check for activation, carrier or account locks.
- Decide before the stated deadline; use the retailer’s return process before unauthorized repair.
- Erase accounts and encryption keys before returning a laptop or phone.
