Apple’s September 9, 2025 iPhone 17 launch changed the U.S. lineup in two different ways: the regular iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus stayed on sale with $100 lower starting prices, while Apple removed the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max from its direct store instead of discounting them. As of Apple’s August 16–18, 2026 U.S. price snapshot, the iPhone 16 starts at $699 and the 16 Plus at $799; remaining 16 Pro units are now a carrier, retailer, refurbished, or used-market question.
What changed after the iPhone 17 reveal?
Apple announced the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air on September 9, 2025. The new models became available in stores on September 19, 2025. Apple’s current U.S. store lists the iPhone 17e, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16 Plus, but neither iPhone 16 Pro model.

Why the iPhone 16 Pro “vanished”
“Discontinued” means Apple stopped selling the models directly. It does not mean every new, refurbished, or used unit disappeared immediately, and it does not end software support. Apple’s normal lineup rotation keeps the current Pro generation at the top and removes the preceding Pro models when successors arrive. Apple has not publicly assigned a more specific strategic reason for this particular removal.

Apple’s iOS 26 materials still name the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max among devices receiving specified features. Retail removal therefore should not be read as immediate obsolescence. See Apple’s announcement at Apple Newsroom.
How much cheaper are the regular iPhone 16 models?
The Apple-direct reduction was $100 at the U.S. starting-price level: the iPhone 16 fell from $799 to $699, and the iPhone 16 Plus from $899 to $799. These are pre-tax starting prices. Storage, financing, carrier activation, promotions, and trade-in credits can change the amount you actually pay.

Apple’s headline iPhone 17 price also requires care. Apple announced the $799 figure with a $30 connectivity discount tied to activation with an eligible carrier. Compare the checkout price and conditions, not just the number in a headline.

At Apple’s displayed U.S. starting prices, yes: $699 for iPhone 16 versus $799 for iPhone 17. But it is not a pure generation-for-generation price comparison. Apple introduced the iPhone 17 with 256GB and 512GB configurations, while the iPhone 16 launched with a 128GB option. Compare the same storage capacity where possible; otherwise the $100 difference partly reflects more included storage.

The iPhone 17 adds a larger, brighter display with ProMotion, the A19 chip, a Center Stage front camera, a 48MP Fusion main camera, and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The iPhone 16 remains an Apple Intelligence-capable generation with ongoing iOS support, so buyers who accept its older hardware may still get stronger value at a genuinely lower upfront price.
What you give up with the cheaper iPhone 16
- A 60Hz display instead of the iPhone 17’s ProMotion experience.
- The newer A19 platform and associated generation of hardware features.
- The iPhone 17’s Center Stage front camera.
- The newer 48MP Fusion camera system, including its 48MP Ultra Wide camera.
The base iPhone 16 can be the sensible choice if a lower purchase price matters most, 60Hz is acceptable, and you do not need the latest camera system. A meaningful retailer or carrier discount can make its value proposition stronger.

What buyers missed by not purchasing an iPhone 16 Pro
Apple did not replace the 16 Pro with the discounted base iPhone 16. The 16 Pro family offered an A18 Pro processor, a 5x telephoto camera on the smaller Pro model, Camera Control, a titanium frame, 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes, and Pro camera and display capabilities. Once Apple removed it, a new 16 Pro became a market-inventory purchase rather than an Apple-store purchase.

That scarcity can produce an unintuitive result: a remaining retailer unit may not fall below Apple’s $699 base-model price, particularly in a desirable color, storage tier, or unlocked configuration. Do not assume “discontinued” automatically means “cheap.”
Best Value
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
Where the iPhone Air fits
Apple lists iPhone Air from $999, the same starting price as the original iPhone 16 Pro. It occupies a new thin-and-light premium position and uses A19 Pro performance, but it is not a direct Pro successor. The 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max remain Apple’s camera-and-performance flagships, while Air’s main appeal is portability and thinness. Apple’s current positioning is described in its 2026 U.S. Apple Upgrade announcement and current store listing.
Which iPhone makes financial sense?
| Buyer priority | Most logical starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest Apple-direct price above the entry model | iPhone 16 at $699 | Current standard iPhone at the lowest listed price above iPhone 17e |
| Newer standard features | iPhone 17 from $799 | ProMotion, A19, newer cameras, and 256GB starting storage |
| Thin, light premium design | iPhone Air from $999 | Thinness and portability rather than Pro camera positioning |
| Maximum camera and performance capability | iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max | Current flagship Pro tier |
| Old-generation Pro design or 5x telephoto | Remaining 16 Pro stock | Buy only through a seller with clear condition, warranty, unlock, and return terms |
Choose the iPhone 16 when
- You want the lowest Apple-direct price above the iPhone 17e.
- You are comfortable with a 60Hz display and last-generation performance.
- You need a current, familiar two-camera iPhone but not the newest camera features.
- A retailer or carrier promotion creates a substantial discount.
Choose the iPhone 17 when
- ProMotion matters in everyday scrolling and animation.
- You want the newer camera and front-camera systems.
- You will keep the phone for years and the normalized-storage price gap is small.
- A trade-in or carrier promotion makes the newer model as cheap as, or cheaper than, the iPhone 16.
Seek a 16 Pro only when its specific features matter
Prioritize Apple-certified refurbished listings, then established retailers or carriers with explicit unlock and return policies. For used units, verify battery health, Activation Lock removal, parts history, warranty, and return protection before paying. Never treat a low sticker price as equivalent to new Apple stock.
A practical comparison checklist
- Set the total budget: Include tax, financing cost, accessories, protection, and any required carrier plan.
- Normalize storage: Compare 256GB with 256GB where possible, rather than comparing an entry-capacity iPhone 16 with a larger-capacity iPhone 17.
- Read promotion conditions: Check carrier, trade-in, new-line, installment, and bill-credit requirements.
- Decide on ProMotion: If 120Hz-style smoothness is important, the base iPhone 16 may disappoint even at a lower price.
- Decide on telephoto: Concerts, travel, portraits, and distant subjects can justify seeking a Pro model.
- Check protection and returns: This is especially important for discontinued or used 16 Pro stock.
- Verify activation status: Avoid Activation Lock, carrier restrictions, and unclear repair histories.
Other costs to include in the purchase decision
Apple’s official Trade In program gives credit based on the phone’s age, condition, and configuration. Carrier deals at Apple’s carrier-offers page can provide larger credits, but terms are volatile and may require bill credits or a particular plan.

Apple’s U.S. Apple Upgrade leases start at $17.99 according to its 2026 announcement at Apple Newsroom. Leasing suits frequent upgraders more than buyers who keep a phone for several years. iCloud+ starts at $0.99 per month in the U.S.; details are at iCloud.
Bottom line for U.S. shoppers
The iPhone 16 is Apple’s official discount play: $699 for the standard model and $799 for the Plus, before tax and purchase conditions. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are not discounted Apple alternatives; they are discontinued models whose remaining value depends on scarce new stock, certified refurbished listings, carrier inventory, or the used market. Compare storage, display refresh rate, camera needs, trade-in terms, and warranty before deciding whether the $100 step to an iPhone 17 is genuinely small or whether the iPhone 16 is the better fit.
