Ratan Tata died on October 9, 2024, at age 86. The brands associated with the Tata Group include Zudio, BigBasket, Tata Tea and Tata Salt—but they do not all have the same ownership structure. Trent owns and operates Zudio, Tata Digital announced a majority-stake acquisition of BigBasket in 2021, and Tata Starbucks is a 50:50 joint venture. Here is who operates the brands and how they relate to the group.
What “Tata Group owns” means
Tata Sons is the Tata Group’s principal investment holding company and promoter of its operating companies. Tata companies operate independently under their own boards, so a brand described as part of the Tata Group may belong to an operating company or a joint venture rather than being directly owned by Tata Sons.
Tata’s official brand showcase is useful for seeing the breadth of names associated with the group, but it is not a complete legal ownership chart. The examples below identify the operating company or relationship where the available company materials establish one.
The scale is substantial: Tata reports aggregate revenue of more than $180 billion across Tata companies in FY2024–25. That is a group-wide figure, not revenue attributable to any one brand.

Which popular brands are part of the Tata Group?
Zudio and Westside: Trent’s retail brands
Zudio is Trent’s value-fashion concept. Trent owns and operates Zudio and Westside, making them Trent brands within the Tata Group—not standalone brands directly operated by Tata Sons. Tata’s FY2025 annual report also includes both names among the group’s retail brands.
BigBasket: majority-stake acquisition by Tata Digital
Tata Digital announced that it had acquired a majority stake in BigBasket on May 28, 2021. That wording establishes the relationship at the time of the announcement; it does not establish a current ownership percentage or support calling BigBasket wholly owned. Tata also listed BigBasket among the brands available on Tata Neu when it announced the platform in 2022.

Tata Tea, Tata Salt and other consumer products
Tata Consumer Products brings together the group’s food and beverage interests. Its portfolio includes Tata Tea, Tata Salt and Tata Soulfull, among other consumer brands. The company also acquired Capital Foods and Organic India in 2024. Capital Foods is associated with Ching’s Secret and Smith & Jones; Organic India is known for herbal supplements.
Tata Starbucks: an equal joint venture
Tata Starbucks is a 50:50 joint venture between Tata Consumer Products and Starbucks Corporation, according to a Tata feature published in January 2023. This describes the Indian joint venture; it does not mean Tata owns Starbucks globally.

Other familiar names
Tata’s FY2025 annual report describes brands across businesses including Titan, Trent, Tata Consumer Products and hospitality. Examples include Tanishq, Fastrack, Zudio, Westside and Taj-group hotel brands. This is a sample, not an exhaustive list of every Tata-associated brand.

Why the distinction matters
“Tata-owned” is convenient shorthand, but it can blur important differences: a group company may run a brand, an operating company may acquire a majority stake in another business, or two companies may share a joint venture equally. Those arrangements are not interchangeable, and a brand showcase alone does not reveal every legal detail.

Ratan Tata’s death in 2024 is the reason “RIP” appears in the original headline, not an indication that the brands changed ownership at that time. In its October 9, 2024 statement, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran wrote: “For the Tata Group, Mr. Tata was more than a chairperson.”
