Are Snapdragon laptops being returned more often? Public reporting from December 2024 does not establish that they are. Intel executive Michelle Johnston Holthaus said retailers were concerned about returns of Arm PCs; Qualcomm responded that its device return rates were within industry norms. Neither side supplied comparable return-rate figures or a disclosed methodology in the report.
What Intel said—and what the claim covers
In a report published December 17, 2024, HotHardware quoted Intel executive Michelle Johnston Holthaus as saying retailers’ “number one concern” about Arm PCs was that a “large percentage” were being returned because expected features did not work during setup. HotHardware attributed the remark to CRN. The quote does not identify retailers, specify a return percentage, or describe how any rate was calculated. HotHardware’s report

The reported concern was about Arm PCs broadly. HotHardware discussed it in the context of Qualcomm’s first Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus Copilot+ PCs, but that context does not turn the remark into a measured return rate for those specific models—or for all Copilot+ PCs.
Qualcomm’s response is also a company claim
Qualcomm disputed the implication that its Snapdragon PCs were being returned at unusually high rates. Its representative told CRN, as quoted by HotHardware, that “Our device return rates are within industry norm.” Qualcomm also pointed to consumer-review ratings and industry awards. Those references are not return-rate data: ratings and awards do not show how many buyers returned a device, and the response did not publish a percentage, comparison group, retailer dataset, or methodology. Accordingly, Qualcomm’s statement is a rebuttal, not independent verification. The public account documents opposing corporate claims, not a settled comparison of Snapdragon and other PCs.
Copilot+ PC does not mean Snapdragon-only
Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as Windows 11 devices with an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Its developer guidance identifies systems built with both Qualcomm Snapdragon and Intel processors, so the category is not limited to Qualcomm devices. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC developer guidance

Qualcomm’s June 5, 2024 explainer described Microsoft’s requirements as a 40-TOPS NPU, 16 GB of memory, and 256 GB of storage. Other figures in the report are forecasts or competitive claims
HotHardware also reported that Qualcomm anticipated 30–50% of laptops might move to non-x86 platforms within five years. This was a company forecast reported in 2024, not an observed market result. Holthaus, meanwhile, argued that Intel’s Core Ultra 200V “Lunar Lake” processors had narrowed efficiency differences while Intel retained advantages in performance and compatibility. These are attributed positions in a competitive dispute, not independently established findings about every device or workload. HotHardware’s report

What a buyer can usefully compare
The dispute alone is not a sound basis for choosing or avoiding a laptop. For your own use, compare the exact models and configurations you are considering, including:
- Compatibility: Check whether the Windows applications, games, peripherals, and workplace tools you rely on work as expected on that specific device.
- Performance and battery life: Look for comparable testing of the configurations you would actually buy, under workloads relevant to you. A broad claim about a processor family cannot substitute for like-for-like test results.
- Total purchase terms: Compare the prices of equivalent configurations, along with each seller’s return window, restocking fees if any, warranty coverage, and return shipping terms.
Those checks address the practical risk raised by Holthaus’s setup-and-compatibility remark without treating an unsupported platform-wide return-rate claim as a benchmark.
