He had just moved from vice president and CFO to president and CEO; that is the role and moment covered by the interview, not his current position.
Who is Steve Sukup?
Steve Sukup grew up around the family company and learned shop work there. After graduating in industrial engineering, he joined Sukup Manufacturing full time in May 1978, according to his written testimony to the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means.
Sukup Manufacturing was founded in Sheffield, Iowa, in 1963 by Eugene and Mary Sukup. The company makes grain storage, drying, and handling equipment, as described in that testimony.
What did Sukup say about leadership?
In the 2020 Q&A with Agriculture.com/Successful Farming, Sukup emphasized persistence and making informed decisions, then working to make those decisions succeed. He summed up his approach this way: “I like to say that moving targets are harder to hit.”

He added: “So as long as you’re making progress, moving forward, make sure you have good information, make a decision, and then work hard to make it a success.” The interview presents this as his personal advice, not as a guarantee that a particular business decision will work.
How did he describe the family business and customer relationships?
Sukup described several relatives as involved in the business and highlighted close contact with customers, including visits and plant tours. His account connects leadership with direct exposure to the people who use the company’s equipment.

What priority did he identify for customers?
In the 2020 interview, Sukup said the company’s next step was to collect more data so customers could better understand its products and what they were raising. That was an interview-era priority; the Q&A does not establish the capabilities of Sukup products today.
