Paperless billing can make statements easier to access and reminders easier to set up, but it works best only if you reliably check the provider’s account and can keep the records you need. Before switching, compare the cost, your review routine, statement access, and accessibility needs. Electronic delivery does not remove the need to inspect each bill.
What are the pros and cons of paperless billing?
Paperless billing changes how a provider delivers or makes a statement available; it does not change what the statement contains or whether you need to review it. Some providers post statements to an online account, send an email notice, or do both. An email alert may not be the statement itself.
| Factor | Potential advantage of paperless billing | Potential drawback or check |
|---|---|---|
| Access | A statement may be available online without waiting for postal delivery. | You need account and internet access. Ask how long statements stay online and whether you can download them. |
| Reminders | Email or account notifications can support a payment routine. | An alert can be filtered or overlooked, and it does not ensure that you open or review the statement. |
| Cost | You may avoid a paper-statement fee if your provider charges one. | Fees, discounts, and free ways to switch depend on the provider and applicable rules. Verify the terms directly. |
| Review and records | Digital access may make it convenient to retrieve or save a statement. | You need a reliable way to access and retain records, and a routine for checking each statement. |
| Accessibility and connectivity | An online format may suit people who prefer managing bills digitally. | Paper may be easier for some people to review or use; internet access and disability-related needs can make a difference. |
Is paperless billing a good idea?
It can be a good fit if you regularly access the relevant account, check every statement, and can save or retrieve records for as long as you need them. It may be a poor fit if you often miss online notices, have unreliable internet access, or find paper easier to read and manage. The choice is less about which format is universally better and more about whether you can use it consistently.
Choose electronic statements if you can
- Open the provider’s portal or email reliably each billing cycle.
- Review transactions and fees rather than relying on the notification alone.
- Download statements or otherwise confirm how long the provider keeps them available.
- Use reminders as prompts, not as proof that a bill has been reviewed or paid.
Keep paper or ask about alternatives if you need them
- You lack dependable internet or mobile-data access for the account.
- You have a disability-related or other accessibility need that paper better meets.
- You find printed statements easier to review or keep.
- The provider’s online retention or retrieval process does not meet your record-keeping needs.
How to manage electronic statements without missing a bill
- Confirm the delivery method. Ask whether statements are posted to a portal, emailed, or both, and whether an email is only an alert.
- Check record access. Find out how long statements remain available and whether you can download them. Save copies when appropriate.
- Set a recurring review reminder. Open each statement and check charges, fees, and other entries. The FTC advises consumers to review account statements for spending, errors, and unauthorized charges: FTC guidance on using credit cards and disputing charges.
- Keep reviewing even with automatic payments. Automatic debiting does not replace checking the bill. The FTC also recommends setting reminders when paying electronically.
- Ask about cost and switching. Confirm whether paper statements cost extra, whether a free or accessible option is available, and how to change the setting back.
Digital statements should not be assumed to make people less attentive. A 2019 Consumer Financial Protection Bureau report said the extent to which paperless cardholders reviewed electronic statements remained an open question; it does not establish that digital-statement users universally review less: CFPB, The Consumer Credit Card Market Report (2019).

Is it better to get paper or electronic statements?
Neither format is best for everyone. Compare the options using your own review habits, access to records, reminder preferences, provider fees, and accessibility or connectivity needs. A provider may offer both formats or let you change later; ask rather than assuming. The available sources do not establish that paper or electronic billing is categorically safer, nor do they quantify their relative privacy or security risks.
Can I switch back to paper billing?
Often the relevant question is whether your provider allows a change and whether it charges for paper, so check the account’s billing settings or contact the provider. Ask how to restore paper delivery and whether any free alternative is available. A 2016 National Consumer Law Center report cited a Novantas analysis finding that 25% of banks offering paper statements charged a fee. That historical figure is not a current estimate for the whole banking market. The same report described an informal survey of NCLC employees who received paper statements: 65% said they would pay nothing to continue receiving them, 22% were willing to pay $1, and 13% were willing to pay $2–$3. Those staff responses are not representative consumer estimates: NCLC, Paper Statements: An Important Consumer Protection (2016).

What rules apply to paperless billing?
Rules depend on the country, account, provider, and kind of record. The examples below are limited in scope; they do not create one universal rule for every bill.
United States: E-SIGN and Regulation E
The federal E-SIGN Act sets conditions for using electronic records to satisfy a legal writing requirement in certain consumer transactions. Depending on the record and legal context, those conditions include affirmative consent, advance disclosure of paper options and withdrawal rights, and information about the hardware, software, and access needed to receive and retain electronic records. For records required to be retained, the law also addresses accessibility and accurate reproduction. It does not mean every bill must be paper or that an identical opt-in rule applies to every billing relationship. See the E-SIGN Act, 15 U.S.C. Chapter 96.

For accounts covered by Regulation E, periodic statements must include specified information, such as fees, balances, and contact details for inquiries or error reports. This is not a general requirement that statements be delivered on paper: 12 CFR § 1005.9.
Canada: protections for specified telecommunications customers
CRTC Decision 2022-28 requires covered Canadian telecommunications providers to supply paper bills on request at no charge to specified customer groups, including seniors, people with disabilities, and customers who lack the relevant internet or mobile-data service from the provider. It also sets information and consent requirements for certain transitions to electronic billing. These protections apply to the specified Canadian communications providers and customer groups; they should not be generalized to U.S. bills, other sectors, or every customer in Canada. See the CRTC decision dated February 10, 2022.
