Public Mobile’s January 2026 replacement plans were less generous than its Boxing Week offers at the $40 and $50 price points. The carrier reduced the advertised data from 100GB to 60GB on the $40 Canada/U.S./Mexico plan and from 150GB to 80GB on the $50 plan, while adding a new $60/100GB tier.
That was not an across-the-board price increase, and it did not by itself prove that existing customers were forced to pay more. It was primarily a same-price data reduction, plus a new higher-priced option. Public Mobile’s catalogue later changed again, so January’s lineup should be treated as a historical snapshot rather than today’s plan list.

What changed after Boxing Week?
Public Mobile’s post-holiday lineup reported on January 13, 2026, replaced unusually generous Boxing Week offers with less data at the $40 and $50 levels. The changes were reported by MobileSyrup and iPhone in Canada.

The January plans included unlimited calling and texting within their applicable coverage zones. The North American plans were designed for use in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, while the lower-priced plans were Canada-only.

Plan availability could differ by new activation, existing account, region or targeted promotion. The table compares the publicly reported offers; it does not guarantee that every customer saw identical options.
How much value disappeared?
The $40 plan fell from 100GB to 60GB—a 40GB, or 40%, reduction—without a reported change to its advertised monthly price. The $50 plan fell from 150GB to 80GB, a reduction of approximately 46.7%.
Using only the advertised price and data allowance, the January value was approximately:

During Boxing Week, the comparable figures were approximately $0.40 per GB for $40/100GB and $0.33 per GB for $50/150GB. These calculations do not measure coverage, network performance, roaming quality, international calling, taxes, Public Points or customer support.

Was this a price increase?
The precise answer is: partly, but not across the board.
- The new $60 plan was a higher-priced tier than the previously reported top Boxing Week offers.
- The $40 and $50 plans were value reductions because customers received fewer gigabytes for the same advertised monthly prices.
- The lower Canada-only tiers were reported as unchanged in January.
It would be inaccurate to say Public Mobile raised everyone’s bill. A public plan disappearing from the signup page is different from an active customer being moved to a new plan or charged more. A customer-specific price increase would require an account notice, payment change or other direct evidence.
What happened to the Boxing Week offers?
The Boxing Week Canada/U.S./Mexico promotions were initially reported as ending January 5, 2026. Later coverage said they remained available until January 11. The offers included $40/100GB and $50/150GB plans, and some plans reportedly included international calling minutes. iPhone in Canada reported on the changing expiry timing, while MobileSyrup covered the data increases.
Those promotions may not have appeared identically for every customer. New activations, existing subscribers, app-based plan changes, regional offers and account-targeted promotions can have different terms or expiry dates. A plan displayed in the app is not necessarily the same offer shown on the public website.

Did existing customers lose their Boxing Week plans?
There is no basis in the January coverage to say that all existing Boxing Week customers were automatically cancelled or migrated. The reports primarily described the newly available public catalogue.
Existing subscribers should therefore distinguish among three different events:
- A plan is removed from the public signup page.
- An active subscriber is forcibly moved to a different plan.
- A subscriber voluntarily changes plans and cannot later recover the old promotion.
Before changing anything, check the Public Mobile app for the exact plan, renewal date, activation timing and any warning that the current plan cannot be recovered. Customer discussions show that account-specific offers existed, but these are customer reports rather than a universal Public Mobile policy: one community discussion and a later discussion illustrate the variability.

- $50/month: 175GB at 5G speed.
The North American promotional tiers were marked as limited-time offers on the official page. The page also listed unlimited talk and text, 1,000 international minutes and 2% back in Public Points for those offers. Check Public Mobile’s current plans page before signing up because prices, data allowances, expiry dates and footnotes can change.
These later offers show why the January story should not be framed as a permanent abandonment of competitive pricing. Public Mobile first rolled back its Boxing Week value, then subsequently introduced a different and, at some price points, more generous lineup.

Headline data is only one part of the comparison. Before switching, confirm:
- Whether the plan’s data works in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico or only in Canada.
- Whether voice and text are unlimited in all included countries.
- The included international long-distance minutes.
- Whether data is 4G or 5G and what happens after the high-speed allowance is exhausted.
- Whether hotspot or tethering is permitted.
- Taxes, subscription terms, eSIM availability and any activation fee.
- Whether Public Points are subject to conditions rather than an immediate cash discount.
- Whether the price is regular or promotional and when the offer expires.
“Unlimited” talk, text or data should not be read as unlimited full-speed data unless the plan’s terms say so. The current official page’s details should not automatically be treated as the terms of the January plans.

Who should stay, switch or compare?
Keep the existing plan if you have a Boxing Week offer
A customer holding $40/100GB or $50/150GB should be cautious about switching. The January replacements offered materially less data at the same prices, and a legacy promotion may not be recoverable after a voluntary change.
Consider a current Public Mobile plan if you need North American service
Someone who regularly travels between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico may value one plan across all three countries more than a Canada-only plan with a larger data allowance. Public Mobile says its network is powered by TELUS and advertises coverage for qualifying plans, but that does not guarantee identical performance in every building, rural area or border location. Check the coverage map and, where possible, test service before porting a primary number.
Compare alternatives if you need different support or roaming
Public Mobile’s BYOD, app-first model can suit customers who do not need device financing or retail-store support. It may be a poor fit for someone who wants phone-based assistance, stores, device financing or roaming well beyond Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

Before you change your plan
- Screenshot the offer, price, data allowance and expiry terms.
- Check whether the offer is available on your account or only to new activations.
- Confirm when the change takes effect and whether it starts on the next 30-day cycle.
- Verify whether your current plan can be restored.
- Compare coverage where you live, work and travel.
- Check taxes, international calling, speed and post-cap rules.
Public Mobile’s current app and official terms take priority over an old promotion, news report or community post.
