Pros and Cons of Secured Credit Cards: What to Know Before Applying

A secured credit card can help you establish or rebuild credit when you use it responsibly and the issuer reports your account activity. In exchange, you put cash down as collateral, accept a credit limit that may be low, and may pay fees or interest. The deposit does not pay your bill, and no card guarantees a higher credit score.

How a secured credit card works

You apply to an issuer and, if approved, provide a cash deposit. The issuer holds that money as security and gives you a credit line; the line is often tied to the deposit, but the arrangement varies. You use the card to borrow for purchases, receive a bill, and must repay what you owe. The deposit is collateral—not a payment toward your monthly balance. The Federal Trade Commission explains that a deposit may be a percentage of the credit limit, perhaps even the full limit.

Depending on the issuer’s terms and your account history, responsible use may lead to a higher limit or the return of your deposit. The FTC says a deposit is usually returned when the balance is paid and the account is closed, but that is general guidance, not a guarantee of automatic repayment or a particular timeline. Check the card agreement for the requirements.

Pros of secured credit cards

They may help establish or rebuild credit

If the issuer reports your account activity and you make payments on time, a secured card can help build a record of borrowing and repayment. Reporting practices differ: ask which credit reporting companies receive information about the account rather than assuming the issuer reports to all three. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) lists secured cards among possible ways to start or rebuild credit, while stressing that credit building takes time and depends on your overall payment history.

They may be accessible when an unsecured card is not

The CFPB suggests trying a secured card if you do not qualify for a regular credit card. Approval is still up to the issuer, and you should review the fees and terms before applying.

A deposit-linked limit can help constrain borrowing

Because the credit line is often related to the deposit, it may be modest, which can limit how much you can borrow. That is a potential spending guardrail, not a guarantee against overspending, fees, or a balance you cannot afford.

Some accounts offer a route to a returned deposit or higher limit

An issuer may raise your limit or return your deposit after you demonstrate responsible use. Whether that happens, and when, depends on the issuer’s criteria and account terms; do not count on a particular outcome when deciding whether you can tie up the cash.

Cons of secured credit cards

Your cash is tied up

The deposit may be unavailable to you while it secures the account. Consider whether you can spare that money without compromising bills, emergency savings, or other needs, and find out exactly what must happen before it is released.

Fees and interest can add to the cost

Some secured cards charge annual, activation, monthly maintenance, or other fees, and their APRs may be high compared with unsecured cards. A deposit is not the only cost: compare unavoidable fees and the interest you could owe if you do not pay in full. The FTC describes fee types and secured-card deposits; use the issuer’s current pricing disclosure and agreement for the specific offer.

A low limit can make a small balance look large

A purchase that seems modest may use a substantial share of a low credit limit. The CFPB advises avoiding balances close to the limit. Some experts cited by the CFPB recommend using no more than 30% of total credit limits, while others recommend less than 10%; these are rules of thumb, not guaranteed scoring thresholds. See the CFPB’s credit-rebuilding guidance.

Credit improvement is neither automatic nor immediate

A card can help only when the account is reported and managed well. It cannot erase missed payments, and a new account does not guarantee a score increase. The CFPB’s guidance is direct: “There are no shortcuts or secrets.”

Applying can affect your credit

A card issuer may review your credit reports when you apply, and that review can involve a hard inquiry that may affect your score. Applying for or opening many accounts in a short time may also be harmful. Ask the issuer what kind of credit check it uses before submitting an application. The CFPB explains when a credit card company can look at your reports.

How to compare secured cards

Compare the terms that determine what the card costs, whether it can support your credit goals, and how you get your deposit back. Issuer terms vary, so verify them in the current agreement and pricing disclosures.

  • Deposit and refund: How much is required? Is it refundable, and what conditions and timing apply?
  • Credit limit: What is the starting limit, and is it tied to the deposit?
  • Fees and APR: Check annual, activation, monthly maintenance, and other fees, as well as the APR.
  • Credit reporting: Which credit reporting companies receive account information?
  • Payments: What are the due-date, payment, and autopay options?
  • Graduation or limit increases: Does the issuer explain whether or when it may return the deposit or move you to an unsecured product?

How to use one without paying unnecessary interest

  1. Pay every bill on time. Payment history matters. Set reminders or use autopay if it fits your budget, and make sure enough money is available when a payment is due.
  2. Keep the balance comfortably below the limit. A low limit can make utilization rise quickly. The CFPB’s percentage suggestions are rules of thumb rather than promises about how a score will change.
  3. Pay in full when you can. Carrying a balance is not required to build credit. The CFPB says, “You don’t need to carry a balance on credit cards to get a good score.” Paying the statement balance in full by the due date can avoid interest on purchases, subject to the card’s terms.
  4. Check your credit reports. Confirm that the account appears and that its information is accurate. A credit report records information about your credit accounts; the CFPB explains what a credit report is and provides guidance on how long information can remain on one. If you find an error, dispute it through the appropriate process.

What alternatives should you consider?

A credit-builder loan may also help establish a payment record; compare its repayment obligation, fees, interest, and whether payments are reported. A retail or store card is another product the CFPB identifies as a possible credit-building option, but review its terms carefully. A prepaid card is different: it uses money you have already deposited rather than extending credit, so it generally does not create a borrowing-and-repayment history. The CFPB’s overview of ways to start or rebuild credit discusses these distinctions.
