The company, founded in 2016 by former Bungie CEO Harold Ryan, used the funding to build game studios supported by a shared central team. That is the historical story; later acquisitions and a changing game portfolio mean the original “family of sustainable game studios” description should not be read as a current organizational chart.
How much money did ProbablyMonsters raise?
Three reported figures describe different points or characterizations of the financing. GeekWire’s June 30, 2021 report said an SEC filing indicated a $50 million tranche from a larger round; the company declined to comment on that filing. GeekWire then reported a $200 million Series A on September 1, 2021, with much of the money said to come from earlier investors whose names were not disclosed. GamesBeat reported in 2022 that the Series A had closed at $250 million. The reports do not establish one regulator-confirmed total, so the figures should be attributed rather than collapsed into a single definitive number.

| $50 million | An SEC filing indicated this tranche from a larger round; a company spokesperson declined to comment on the filing. | GeekWire, June 30, 2021 |
| $200 million | Reported as the size of a Series A; much of it was described as coming from earlier investors, whose identities were not disclosed. | GeekWire, September 1, 2021 |

The $50 million filing tranche and the later reported round amounts are not necessarily competing totals: they refer to distinct reporting moments and descriptions. The available reports do not independently reconcile how the amounts relate.
Who founded ProbablyMonsters, and what was its studio model?
Harold Ryan, Bungie’s former CEO, founded ProbablyMonsters in 2016. Rather than treating each development studio as a wholly separate operation, the company described a central team providing support such as funding, publishing negotiations, staffing, administration and technology. The stated aim was to let development teams focus on making games within a company-built support structure.

#1 Best Overall
In an October 2020 company announcement, ProbablyMonsters said it had formed three studios: Firewalk, Cauldron and an unnamed team developing a co-op RPG. The announcement also reported more than 150 employees at that time. Those are company-reported figures from 2020, not an established present-day headcount or roster. Ryan described the company’s values in that announcement: “People-first game developers with a passion for their craft, who foster trust, respect, and approachability, belong at ProbablyMonsters.” ProbablyMonsters’ October 2020 announcement
What changed after the 2021 funding reports?
A major change to the early studio lineup came in April 2023, when Sony Interactive Entertainment announced an agreement to acquire Firewalk Studios from ProbablyMonsters. The deal means the 2020 announcement’s three-studio lineup cannot be assumed to describe the company’s current structure. Sony’s announcement details the agreement: Sony Interactive Entertainment, April 20, 2023.
Ryan’s later comments also qualify the original model’s reach. In an August 2025 interview as reported by GamesRadar, he said, “I think that model is appropriate for some games, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for all games.” The comment was reported secondhand by GamesRadar on August 5, 2025; it is best understood as Ryan’s view of the model’s suitability, not proof of a specific current company structure.

Crimson Moon
In an August 2026 announcement, ProbablyMonsters said Crimson Moon launched September 1, 2026, for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The announcement listed a U.S. price of $19.99 and described solo and cooperative play. Price and availability can vary by region and change over time; the launch announcement is dated information, not a guarantee of the current local store price.

How to read the “family of sustainable game studios” phrase
The phrase belongs to the company-building ambition presented around the funding story: a central organization would support multiple game-making teams. It is not evidence that all three studios announced in 2020 remain together under the same arrangement today. The subsequent Firewalk acquisition, Ryan’s later qualification that the model does not fit every game, and the company’s current game-focused portfolio each show why the headline should be read in its 2021 context.
