Yes, you can sometimes buy a seat on a flight marketed as private jet sharing—but “sharing” describes several different arrangements, not one standard service. You might be buying a seat on a public charter, joining a group’s charter, booking a repositioning flight with a fixed route, or sharing certain expenses on a private-pilot flight. Those options have different contracts, costs, and U.S. regulatory rules. Before paying, find out who is selling the seat, who operates the aircraft, and what happens if the flight changes or does not go ahead.
What does “private jet sharing” mean?
The phrase is an umbrella term. A platform’s use of “shared” does not, on its own, establish how a flight is regulated or what protections apply. In the United States, the main arrangements to distinguish are:
| Arrangement | What you are buying | Key point to check |
|---|---|---|
| Public charter seat | A seat sold to the public by a charter organizer for a flight operated by an airline. | Confirm the operating airline, the applicable DOT public-charter filing, and the participant contract. |
| Group or shared charter | A place in a trip arranged by a lead traveler, group, or platform with an operator; the exact payment and contract structure varies. | Check who contracts with the operator, how costs are divided, and what happens if the trip does not fill. |
| Private-pilot expense sharing | A pro-rata share of certain permitted expenses on a qualifying private-pilot flight. | This is a narrow FAA exception, not a general public seat marketplace. |
| Empty leg | A seat on a repositioning flight that would otherwise fly without passengers. | The route and date follow the aircraft’s schedule and may change. |
Public charter seats
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) describes a public charter as an arrangement in which a person or company hires an airline to operate a flight and sells seats to the public. The organizer selling the seat and the airline operating the flight can be different companies. DOT requires acceptance of the operator’s prospectus before seats can be sold; sales materials and price quotes must identify the operating airline. Read the operator-participant contract for the particular trip, especially its refund and cancellation terms.
Travelers sharing a charter
Some services connect travelers who want to join a charter or share the cost of an aircraft. GetJet describes users starting or joining a shared flight and purchasing Jet Sharing seats. Tappjet describes a lead charterer arranging a trip with a licensed operator and inviting members to share the charter cost. Those are provider descriptions, not proof that every offer works the same way. The contract, payment flow, minimum number of participants, and consequences of a trip not filling depend on the offer.

Private-pilot expense sharing
FAA guidance on 14 CFR 61.113(c) permits a private pilot to share fuel, oil, airport expenditures, or rental fees pro rata only under specific conditions: the pilot and passengers must have a bona fide common purpose, the pilot must choose the destination, and the service cannot be held out to the public. This exception should not be confused with permission to advertise routine paid rides to strangers.
Empty legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight that would otherwise carry no passengers. It can cost less than commissioning a trip, but it is not a flexible substitute for choosing a route and departure time. For example, PrivJet says the route and date for its listed legs are fixed; UpLeg says an operator may withdraw a leg if the aircraft’s schedule changes. These are provider-specific terms, not guarantees or universal rules for every empty-leg booking.

Can you share a private jet with strangers?
Yes, some services offer seats to people who are not traveling together, but the answer depends on the specific arrangement. A public charter organizer may sell seats to the public; a group-charter service may let travelers join an existing trip; an empty-leg listing may offer seats on a particular repositioning flight. In each case, confirm that you are buying an individual seat rather than contributing toward an aircraft you could be responsible for chartering.
Ask for the written contract before paying. It should make clear who sells the seat, who operates the flight, whether your booking is conditional on other passengers, and what happens to your payment if the trip is canceled, rescheduled, or does not meet a minimum participation requirement.

How much does private jet sharing cost?
There is no single market price established for private jet sharing, and the available provider figures below are not directly comparable: one is a booking fee, while the other is a membership price. The amount you pay also depends on whether the price covers a seat or an aircraft, the route and date, and any platform, service, or membership charges. Do not treat a provider’s fee or savings claim as an industry-wide rate.
| Provider-stated charge | What it applies to | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 20% service fee | PrivJet says this is added to its flight price when a booking is made. | PrivJet-specific figure from its page accessed October 8, 2026; not an industry standard. |
| USD 500 annual fee | Tappjet states this as a membership price on a campaign page. | Provider-stated amount on an undated page accessed October 8, 2026; verify the current terms before relying on it. It is not a market rate. |
Ask for the total payable amount in writing, including platform, service, and membership fees. Compare like with like: a per-seat quote is not comparable to a price for a whole aircraft, and a membership charge may not include any flight cost.

Is jet sharing legal in the United States?
It depends on the type of flight and how it is sold and operated. A public charter, a whole-aircraft charter, a private-pilot expense-sharing flight, and an empty-leg seat are not automatically governed by the same arrangement. The FAA’s private-pilot expense-sharing exception has the specific limits described above; a platform label does not establish that an offer falls within it.
DOT says that in a single-entity charter, the contracting individual or company pays the full travel cost and cannot sell individual seats to others. By contrast, public-charter seat sales involve an organizer selling seats to the public under the applicable DOT requirements. If you are offered a seat, ask which structure applies and obtain the contract that describes your role and payment obligations. These regulatory details are U.S.-specific; other countries have different rules.

- Identify what the price buys. Confirm whether you are purchasing one seat, joining a group charter, or paying for the whole aircraft, and ask whether departure depends on a minimum number of travelers.
- Get the operator’s name. For a public charter, DOT says sales materials and price quotes must name the operating airline. Confirm the aircraft and operator’s authorization using the FAA’s passenger guidance.
- Read the written terms. Check who holds your payment, what refunds apply, and how cancellation, schedule changes, and an unfilled trip are handled. DOT says public-charter passenger funds are protected under its rules and directs travelers to the contract and claim process; do not assume that this specific protection covers every other arrangement.
- Verify the total price. Request all platform, service, and membership fees, and check whether baggage, accessibility, and passenger support are addressed.
- Check who controls the flight. The FAA flags questions such as whether a passenger was coached on what to tell an inspector, whether the aircraft and operator are authorized, and whether the passenger could be liable for the flight or have operational control. Do not rely on verbal assurances or an unusually low quote in place of clear documents.
The FAA says air charter—also known as commuter or on-demand operations under 14 CFR part 135—requires more pilot training and certification, maintenance procedures, and safety rules than a private pilot carrying family or friends. Its Safe Air Charter guidance also warns that illegal air charter operations pose a serious safety hazard to travelers.
Are empty-leg flights reliable?
An empty-leg booking is less predictable than a trip whose aircraft is chartered specifically for your itinerary because the aircraft’s repositioning schedule determines the route and date. Provider terms differ: PrivJet describes its listed route and date as fixed, while UpLeg says an operator may withdraw a leg if the aircraft schedule changes. Read the applicable cancellation and refund terms rather than assuming a listing is guaranteed to operate. This option is best suited to travelers who can accept the stated route and date and have a workable alternative if plans change.
