Princess Diana’s Net Worth: What Her 1998 Probate Record Shows

Diana’s 1998 probate record gives the executors’ sworn gross estate as £21,711,485 and net estate as £21,468,352—historical probate values, not a current net-worth estimate.

What was Princess Diana’s net worth? The clearest documented figure is from her 1998 probate record: her executors swore that the gross estate passing under the grant was £21,711,485 and the net estate was £21,468,352. These are historical probate figures, not a current personal net-worth calculation.

What the probate record says

The figures appear in a reproduced probate document. Its wording gives two different labels for the same £21,468,352 amount, so they should be kept distinct rather than silently treated as identical measures.

Probate-record line Amount What it describes
Executors’ sworn gross estate passing under the grant £21,711,485 Gross estate stated in the probate statement.
Executors’ sworn net estate £21,468,352 Net estate stated in the probate statement.
Grant certificate: gross value of the estate in the United Kingdom £21,468,352 The grant’s separately labelled UK gross value.

The grant is dated 2 March 1998. The record documents the estate for probate purposes; it does not establish a present-day personal balance sheet or provide an inflation-adjusted figure.

How the estate was arranged

Diana signed her will on 1 June 1993 and a codicil on 1 February 1996. On 19 December 1997, the High Court approved an arrangement concerning the administration and trusts for her minor sons, Prince William and Prince Henry (Harry), finding it was for their benefit.

Contemporary reporting said the sons inherited the bulk of the estate in trust. The varied arrangement also provided £50,000 for butler Paul Burrell and directed the executors to distribute selected personal objects to Diana’s godchildren. The report said each of the 17 godchildren received an object or painting, not a cash inheritance.

What the estate included

A 1998 report by The Independent described the estate as including stocks and shares, jewellery, cash largely derived from Diana’s £17 million divorce settlement, dresses, and other belongings at Kensington Palace. The £17 million is the report’s description of the settlement, not a separate probate valuation of the estate’s cash. This overview is not an item-by-item inventory or appraisal.

Why this is not a current “net worth” estimate

Diana died in 1997, so “Princess Diana’s net worth” is best answered with a dated estate figure rather than a claim about wealth she holds today. Probate values and rich-list estimates are different measures with different methods and scopes; an academic comparison lists Diana Spencer in a probate-versus-rich-list analysis, but that does not make the measures interchangeable.

No verified present-day personal net-worth figure or sourced inflation conversion is established here. Any conversion of the probate amount into current pounds would need to name its index, calculation date, and method, and should be presented as a later calculation—not as a figure stated by the probate record.
