But that was not Amazon’s own revenue: it covered the wider retail market, including competing promotions. Adobe also reported that traffic arriving at retail websites from generative-AI services rose 3,300% year over year—a sharp increase from a small base, not evidence that AI generated 3,300% more sales.
What the $24.1 billion figure actually measures
Adobe recorded $24.1 billion in U.S. online retail spending from July 8 through July 11, 2025, a 30.3% increase from the comparable prior-year period. Its analysis covered more than 1 trillion visits, approximately 100 million product SKUs and 18 product categories. Adobe’s methodology and results measure online spending across U.S. retailers—not just Amazon.

That distinction matters. Walmart, Target, Best Buy and other retailers ran overlapping promotions, turning Prime Day into a broader shopping period. The figure represents online transaction value during the measurement window; it is not necessarily retailer profit, net revenue or Amazon’s gross merchandise volume.

Amazon said Prime Day 2025 was its biggest event ever by sales and items sold, but it did not disclose an Amazon-only dollar total. Therefore, it is inaccurate to call the entire $24.1 billion “Amazon sales.”
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
The event also lasted 96 hours—the first four-day Prime Day—rather than the more typical 48-hour format. That longer window makes year-over-year comparisons useful but imperfect. Adobe had forecast $23.8 billion and 28.4% growth before the event.
Why the comparison with Black Friday needs context
Adobe compared the $24.1 billion Prime Day-period total with $10.8 billion spent online in the U.S. on Black Friday 2024. The Prime Day-period figure was therefore more than twice that single-day benchmark.
This does not mean Prime Day generated twice the spending of the entire Black Friday weekend. It compares four days with one day, and the Prime Day window included competitor discounts, seasonal shopping and back-to-school purchases.
Where shoppers spent
Compared with average daily sales in June 2025, Adobe reported particularly strong increases in several categories:
Rank #2
- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
- Appliances: 112%
- Office supplies: 105%
- Electronics: 95%
- Books: 81%
- Tools and home improvement: 76%
- Home and garden: 58%
- Baby and toddler products: 55%
Back-to-school demand was especially pronounced: school-supply sales rose 175% and dorm essentials rose 84% against the June daily average.
Mobile shopping also passed a significant milestone. Mobile devices generated 53.2% of online sales, or approximately $12.8 billion. Mobile’s share rose from 43.7% in 2022, 46.5% in 2023 and 49.2% in 2024.
Discounts and buy-now-pay-later spending
Adobe reported peak discounts of 24% for apparel, 23% for electronics, 19% for toys, 18% for televisions and 17% for appliances. Furniture discounts reached 16%, computers 13% and sporting goods 11%.
Flexible payment plans were also more common. Buy Now, Pay Later transactions represented 8.1% of online orders, up from 7.4% in 2024. BNPL spending reached $2.0 billion, a 33.3% year-over-year increase.
Rank #3
- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
These figures show that discounts and payment flexibility accompanied strong demand. They do not prove that either factor caused the entire increase. Consumers should compare an item’s historical price, shipping cost, warranty, return policy and seller reputation before treating a discount as a genuine saving. BNPL can also create late fees, missed-payment consequences and fragmented debt if several purchases overlap.
What “GenAI traffic up 3,300%” means
Adobe’s 3,300% figure refers to the year-over-year increase in referral traffic to U.S. retail websites from generative-AI-powered chat services and browsers. It tracks shoppers who clicked links from those services. It does not measure completed orders, sales revenue or the percentage of shoppers using AI.
Nor does it establish that AI drove 3,300% more sales, that AI became the dominant shopping channel or that every referral came from an autonomous shopping agent. The evidence concerns click-through traffic, not independent purchasing or checkout.
A large percentage increase can coexist with modest commercial scale when the starting base is small. Adobe said AI-driven traffic remained smaller than established sources such as paid search and email.

AI was growing fast—but established channels remained larger
Paid search was the leading measured revenue-driving channel during the period, accounting for 28.5% of online revenue. Affiliates and partners, including social-media influencers, accounted for 19.9%, up 15% year over year.
Adobe said shoppers referred by influencers converted at a rate 10 times higher than social media overall. That provides an important contrast: GenAI had the fastest reported growth rate, but affiliates, influencers, paid search, email and direct traffic were more commercially established.
For retailers, the useful question is not simply whether AI referrals increased. It is whether those visitors convert profitably, produce acceptable average order values, generate repeat purchases and create manageable return rates.

- Separate AI referrals from other traffic. Track referral source, landing page, device, conversion rate and revenue rather than grouping AI with ordinary search or direct traffic.
- Measure profit, not clicks alone. Compare margin, customer-acquisition cost, returns, average order value and customer lifetime value.
- Maintain accurate product information. Product feeds should include current prices, inventory, shipping details, variants, reviews and return terms. Structured information can help discovery, but no vendor or platform guarantees AI visibility.
- Account for attribution gaps. A shopper may research through an AI service, then buy through an app, bookmark or retailer marketplace. Last-click reporting can understate AI’s assistive role—or overstate its value if the referral does not lead to a purchase.
- Test before reallocating budgets. AI referrals are growing quickly, but the available data does not justify abandoning paid search, email or affiliate programs that already produce measurable results.
Tools such as Google Analytics 4, Google Merchant Center and, for larger organizations, Adobe Analytics can support measurement and product-feed management. Using one does not automatically make a retailer appear in AI shopping results.

What consumers should take away
Prime Day is no longer only an Amazon event. It has become a marketwide promotional period in which consumers compare Amazon’s offers with sales from other retailers. Prime-member exclusivity applied to Amazon’s event, while many competing promotions did not require membership.
AI can help consumers discover products and compare options, but recommendations may omit sponsored placements, marketplace seller differences, warranty terms, shipping costs, return rules or quality concerns. Verify important details on the retailer’s product page before buying.
The broader significance
Adobe’s data points to two different trends. First, promotional shopping events are spreading across the retail market, with mobile commerce, category discounts, back-to-school demand and payment flexibility contributing to a large spending window. Adobe also reported online prices were down 2.1% year over year in June 2025 after 34 months of e-commerce price declines. That suggests the increase was not explained simply by higher prices, although the sales figures themselves were not inflation-adjusted.

Second, generative AI is becoming a noticeable referral source. A 3,300% increase is commercially important as a signal of acceleration, but it is not yet a measure of channel dominance. The next decisive metrics will be conversion, revenue, margin and repeat-purchase performance.
For a current-date note, these figures describe Prime Day 2025. Amazon’s U.S. Prime Day in 2026 took place June 23–26, so the 2025 results should not be presented as the latest Prime Day outcome.
