Preston North End takeover: what the reported £50m American bid means

The £50 million figure was a reported 2024 asking price, not a confirmed sale. Preston later confirmed talks with several parties, including Amr Zedan, but the available sources do not establish a completed takeover.

No confirmed £50 million takeover of Preston North End is established by the available reports. The figure appeared in June 2024 coverage of reported Miami-based interest and an alleged asking price. In January 2026, chairman Ian Penrose confirmed discussions with several potential buyers, including Amr Zedan, but described the process as early and uncertain. The available sources do not establish that the 2024 consortium and Zedan are connected, or that a sale has since completed.

What the £50 million figure does—and does not—mean

A June 2024 report by Game of the People summarized media accounts that a Miami-based consortium had made a bid and that Preston’s asking price was £50 million. That is a reported asking price, not a verified current valuation, an accepted offer, or evidence of an agreed sale.

There was a significant qualification at the time: a Preston North End and Preston Supporters Collective meeting record said the club’s board had no contact from a Miami or New York consortium. The two accounts therefore do not establish a confirmed approach to the board. One relayed reports of interest; the meeting record reported that the board had not been contacted by those groups at that point.

What Preston confirmed in 2026

On 26 January 2026, chairman Ian Penrose confirmed to the club website, in comments reported by BBC Sport, that Preston had started discussions with several parties from around the world interested in acquiring the club. He specifically confirmed discussions with US-born Saudi businessman Amr Zedan, while making clear that Zedan was one of several people or organisations to make enquiries.

Penrose said: “This process is in its early stages and is ongoing as we continue to receive new approaches.” He also said: “I can confirm that we have had discussions with Mr Zedan, who we respect highly.” He described the outcome as uncertain, while saying the board intended to conclude negotiations at the earliest opportunity. These statements confirm discussions and enquiries—not an accepted bid or completed transaction.

How the takeover reports differ

Date and source What was reported What it establishes
June 2024, Game of the People summarizing media reports Reported Miami-based consortium interest and a £50 million asking price. An attributed report of interest and an asking price; not a confirmed offer accepted by Preston.
2024, Preston North End and Preston Supporters Collective meeting record The board had no contact from a Miami or New York consortium at the time. The club-related record’s account of contact status at that meeting; it does not resolve what media reports described.
26 January 2026, BBC Sport reporting Penrose’s comments and the club statement Discussions with several interested parties, including Amr Zedan. Chairman-confirmed discussions and enquiries, with no confirmation of a deal.
24 May 2026, Vital Football Claimed that the Zedan-led effort had reached regulatory checks and forecast news in June. A secondary report, not official confirmation of a transaction or its eventual outcome.

The sources do not connect the Miami/New York interest reported in 2024 to the later discussions involving Zedan. They should not be treated as a single buyer or as two verified competing bids.

Is Preston’s takeover complete?

The sources available for this account do not establish whether a takeover completed, talks ended, or discussions remained active by 8 October 2026. The May 2026 report’s forecast of news in June is not proof that news followed. Without a later official announcement in the reviewed sources, the outcome remains unresolved here.

Financial figures behind the old asking-price report

Game of the People’s June 2024 coverage also cited Preston’s 2022–23 financial figures: revenue of £15.6 million, a pre-tax loss of £14.4 million, and gross debt of £85.7 million, almost all owed to the Hemmings family. These are historical figures for that reporting period, not a current balance sheet or a basis for treating £50 million as today’s confirmed valuation.

The same 2024 report said the club was owned by Wordon Limited, belonging to the Hemmings family. That describes the ownership reported at the time; it does not establish the club’s ownership status in October 2026.
