Loan and Triet Ly, who ran Canvas Café at Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre for more than a decade before finishing in 2022, returned as operators of the venue’s new café, PLATED. The City of Fremantle announced the appointment in June 2025 and planned an opening for 1 September 2025; a later City visitor publication describes PLATED as open.
Who is reopening the Fremantle Arts Centre café?
The operators are Loan and Triet Ly, the couple behind the former Canvas Café at the Arts Centre. The City of Fremantle said they had run Canvas for more than a decade, ending that operation in 2022. Afterward, they took time to rest and travel and established a business in Victoria Park before deciding to return.
Loan Ly said: “From a business point of view, we decided that this is the right opportunity for our family.” The City’s June 2025 announcement also quoted her describing the return as a chance to “pick up where we left off and make it even better.”
What is the café called, and when did it open?
The new café is PLATED. On 26 June 2025, the City announced the appointment and said the planned opening date was 1 September 2025. A later City visitor publication presents PLATED as an operating café, so the September date should be understood as the announced schedule rather than the date independently established by the later listing.
