Pratt & Whitney Engine Issues: Global Airline Impact in 2026

The main global disruption is the PW1100 GTF powder-metal inspection campaign. Its March 2025 grounding peak was substantial, but it is not a current fleet count—and separate PW4000 events have different scopes.

The largest ongoing global disruption associated with Pratt & Whitney engines is the inspection and maintenance campaign for certain PW1100 GTF engines, which power the Airbus A320neo family. A rare powder-metal condition in certain engine parts led to accelerated inspections and additional shop visits. At the campaign’s documented peak in March 2025, 648 GTF-powered aircraft—28% of that fleet—were grounded awaiting shop visits, spare engines or parts. That is a historical peak, not a count for October 2026.

Which Pratt & Whitney issue is affecting airlines most?

“Pratt & Whitney engine issues” can refer to different engine families and events. The principal continuing global fleet disruption described here is the powder-metal inspection campaign affecting certain PW1100 GTF engines. RTX has said the powder-metal finding prompted accelerated inspections of the PW1100 GTF fleet, used on the Airbus A320neo family, and brought elevated aircraft-on-ground levels and significant incremental shop visits.

The GTF name covers engines used on more than one aircraft family: Pratt & Whitney lists the Airbus A320neo family, Airbus A220 and Embraer E-Jets E2 among its applications. That does not mean every GTF model or aircraft using a GTF has the same inspection requirement. RTX’s description of the accelerated powder-metal inspections specifically identifies the PW1100 GTF fleet and A320neo family. JetBlue’s disclosures separately discuss PW1100G and PW1500G engines in its A321neo and A220 fleets.

How large was the disruption, and what do the figures measure?

Aircraft-on-ground (AOG) figures are snapshots of aircraft unavailable for service; they should not be treated as a running count of all affected engines, or added across dates as though each figure measured the same population. The available figures also differ in scope: one is a global historical peak, while another is an airline’s year-end disclosure.

Global GTF aircraft grounded at peak 648 aircraft, or 28% of the GTF fleet, in March 2025. Aircraft were awaiting shop visits, spare engines or parts; this is a historical peak, not an October 2026 count. International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Emerton, study announcement, June 24, 2026.
Earlier GTF grounding snapshot About 637 of 1,334 GTF-powered aircraft were grounded. This June 2024 snapshot is separate from, and should not be combined with, the March 2025 peak. IATA guidance document, June 2024.
Reported inspection duration IATA reported inspection times growing from 60 days to more than 300 days. This is an attributed 2024 report, not a guaranteed turnaround for every engine. IATA guidance document, June 2024.
JetBlue aircraft grounded for engine availability Four aircraft as of December 31, 2025. JetBlue Airways Corporation, 2025 annual report.
JetBlue estimated engine shop visits Approximately 200 days for PW1500G and 300 days for PW1100G engines. These are JetBlue’s estimates, not global averages. JetBlue Airways Corporation, 2025 annual report.
GTF MRO network 20 shops worldwide. Pratt & Whitney product and service page, undated; accessed October 5, 2026.

The sources available do not establish a comprehensive worldwide GTF aircraft-on-ground count for October 5, 2026, or a complete airline-by-airline tally. The March 2025 peak is therefore useful for showing the scale reached, not for describing the fleet’s status now.

Why can inspections keep aircraft out of service for so long?

An inspection requirement creates work, but the time an aircraft remains unavailable also depends on whether an engine can be removed, inspected, repaired and returned—and on what parts, spare engines and shop capacity are available. IATA identifies engine durability problems, spare-parts shortages, limited spare-engine availability and constrained access to aftermarket maintenance as interacting pressures. These are related operational constraints, not one technical cause.

It vividly demonstrates aeronautical principles and the mechanics of turboprop propulsion, making aviation technology more tangible and engaging.

The scale of the maintenance task is growing as well. IATA and Emerton reported that 2,000 single-aisle aircraft engines were delivered in 2024: 800 GTF and 1,200 LEAP engines. That is industry context, not a count of Pratt & Whitney engines affected by the powder-metal campaign. Their study forecasts about 3,700 single-aisle engine deliveries annually in 2030–2040 and GTF annual shop visits rising from 1,000 to more than 2,000 by 2040. Those are forecasts, not realized delivery or maintenance totals.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh described the wider pressure in the study announcement: “Engine MRO bottlenecks are disrupting airline operations. Without significant changes, this will only get worse as the fleet of latest-generation single-aisle aircraft grows.”

How have airlines responded?

Airlines have used fleet and capacity measures to cope with aircraft unavailable for engine work. IATA and Emerton report that carriers have retained older aircraft, extended leases, leased additional aircraft and adjusted capacity. These actions can help maintain service or adapt schedules, but the cited evidence does not establish a single passenger-delay, cancellation or airfare total attributable to the engine issues.

For consumers managing travel or household costs, the evidence supports a clear distinction: the maintenance disruption can affect airline operations, but it does not by itself establish how much a particular traveler’s ticket cost or whether a specific flight was delayed. No global fare increase or passenger-loss total attributable solely to these issues is established in the sources cited here.

Are the PW4000 events part of the GTF campaign?

No. The GTF powder-metal campaign and FAA actions involving certain PW4000 engines are separate matters. They concern different engine families, aircraft applications and inspection scopes.

2021: fan-blade failure on a Boeing 777

In February 2021, after a fan-blade failure on a PW4000-powered Boeing 777-200 that had departed Denver, the FAA said the aircraft landed safely but that the failure caused engine damage, an in-flight fire and damage to the airplane. The resulting directive required inspection before further flight for certain PW4000-equipped aircraft. It was not the PW1100 GTF powder-metal campaign.

2026: a separate directive covering specified PW4000 models

A separate FAA directive published in 2026 requires repetitive inspections of named components on specified PW4000 models. The directive followed an IAE PW1127GA-JM compressor rotor separation and aborted takeoff. That event and directive should not be recast as either the GTF powder-metal campaign or the 2021 fan-blade action.

What is changing by late 2026—and what remains unknown?

RTX’s 2025 annual filing said it expected elevated groundings and incremental shop visits related to inspections to continue through the end of 2026. On September 24, 2026, RTX announced delivery to United of the first aircraft powered by the GTF Advantage. RTX said it plans to move PW1100G-JM production to the Advantage specification by 2028 and expects an HS+ upgrade option to become available during maintenance visits in early 2027.

Those are manufacturer-reported delivery and future plans; they do not establish that the existing fleet’s inspection and shop-visit disruption has ended. As of October 5, 2026, the sources cited here do not provide a complete global aircraft-on-ground count, a full airline-by-airline impact, or a global total for delays, cancellations, fares or financial losses attributable solely to the engine issues.
