Pay-per-click (PPC) is an advertising model in which you typically pay when someone clicks your ad. To make PPC useful—not merely a source of traffic—start with a business outcome, connect keywords and ads to a relevant landing page, set a budget you can afford, and verify conversion tracking before judging results.

What is PPC advertising?

PPC, short for pay-per-click, describes a way of charging for advertising: the advertiser pays when a person clicks. In paid search, an advertiser chooses keywords or themes, and eligible ads can compete for placements in or around search results. The cost of a click is commonly called cost per click (CPC).

PPC is not one ad format or the only way to buy digital advertising. Platforms also offer campaigns and bidding approaches focused on impressions, video views, or conversions. The right goal depends on what the business needs. Google Ads explains bidding goals and how they relate to campaign objectives; Microsoft Advertising outlines search advertising and related concepts.

How does pay-per-click advertising work?

When ad space becomes available, eligible advertisers can participate in an auction. A bid is one input: setting a maximum bid does not guarantee that an ad will appear, and it does not necessarily mean every click costs the full bid. Auction mechanics and spending controls depend on the platform and campaign type.

Before launching, decide what a worthwhile result is. A shop may care about purchases; a service business may value qualified leads or calls. A campaign optimized only for cheap clicks can attract visitors without producing the outcome the business needs. Google describes bidding options for clicks, impressions, conversions, or video views, depending on campaign type. Conversion-focused approaches rely on measurement and may have eligibility requirements.

How do I plan a beginner PPC campaign?

  1. Choose a measurable business outcome. Define the action that matters, such as a purchase, qualified lead, phone call, or useful visit. Be specific about what counts as success.
  2. Choose the platform and campaign scope. Consider the audience and inventory you want to reach, along with geography, schedule, and the time you can devote to management. Set a budget you can afford while learning. Microsoft’s new-advertiser guidance describes selecting a goal and daily budget during campaign setup.
  3. Organize closely related keywords. Group terms by what the searcher wants, such as a particular service, product, or location. Make each ad group and its ad relevant to that intent.
  4. Write an accurate ad and choose its destination. State a clear offer without promising more than the landing page delivers. The page should answer the expectation created by the search and ad. Google’s Google Ads setup checklist emphasizes the relevance of the destination page to the ad and keywords.
  5. Set up and test conversion tracking. Define the valuable action, install the platform tag or another supported measurement method, and confirm that a test action is recorded. Do this before relying on conversion-based bidding or using conversion results to judge campaign value.
  6. Review reports and refine. Check performance at campaign, ad-group, keyword, and search-term level. Keep relevant terms, exclude irrelevant queries, and adjust targeting, ads, bids, budget, or landing-page content in response to what you learn.

How do I choose PPC keywords?

A keyword is a term or phrase an advertiser selects to make an ad eligible for relevant searches. Begin with the language customers use for the product or service and add meaningful context, such as location or a specific need. A person searching for a named service in a particular city may have a different intent from someone searching for general information; the ad and landing page should reflect that difference.

Match types control how closely a search query must relate to the selected keyword. Google currently describes broad match as reaching related searches beyond the literal keyword, phrase match as more constrained, and exact match as the narrowest of the three. Broad match can include searches that narrower match types may capture as well as additional related searches. Google’s keyword matching documentation explains its current options.

Microsoft Advertising also describes exact, phrase, and broad matching. The names are familiar, but matching behavior is platform-specific and can change; consult the platform’s current guidance when setting up a campaign. More constrained targeting can limit unrelated exposure but may also limit reach. Broader targeting can surface useful queries, but it requires close monitoring. Neither approach guarantees better results. Use search-term reports to see which queries triggered ads and refine targeting accordingly, as described in Microsoft’s search marketing guide.

How much should I spend on PPC?

There is no universal “right” daily budget or universally good CPC, click-through rate (CTR), or cost per acquisition (CPA). The reviewed platform guidance does not establish industry-wide benchmark figures that apply to every advertiser. Base the budget on what the business can afford to spend while testing, the value of the outcome, and how much evidence is needed to make a decision.

These standard formulas help interpret results; they are calculations, not industry benchmarks:

  • CPC: total spend divided by clicks.
  • CPA: total spend divided by the conversions you have defined.
  • CTR: clicks divided by impressions.

A low CPC is not automatically a good result if those clicks do not lead to valuable actions. Compare spending and outcomes with the campaign’s goal and the business economics behind it. Budgets and bids help control spending, but the precise controls and pacing vary by platform. Microsoft describes these controls in its guide to budgets, bids, and pricing.

How do I track PPC conversions?

A conversion is an action the advertiser considers valuable, such as a purchase, lead form submission, or phone call. Define it to match the business outcome, implement the platform’s tag or equivalent measurement method, and test that the event is recorded. Microsoft explains how conversion tracking can connect ad clicks with actions such as purchases, forms, and calls in its new-advertiser FAQs.

Conversion data can help identify campaigns, keywords, and ads associated with outcomes. Reporting and attribution may be incomplete or delayed, so a recorded association does not prove that an ad alone caused a sale. Google notes that conversion tracking is required for certain CPA bidding approaches; do not rely on a strategy that depends on conversion data until measurement is working.

Google Ads or Microsoft Advertising: which should I use?

Neither platform is a universal winner. The official materials explain platform features, but they do not establish which will be cheaper or perform better for a particular advertiser. Compare them against the audience and inventory you need, their keyword and reporting controls, available budget and bidding options, conversion-measurement setup, and the time needed to manage another campaign.

A sensible choice is the platform that can reach your intended customers and support your measurement and management needs. If you test more than one, evaluate each against the same business outcome and budget logic rather than assuming results will match.
