Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) solve different security problems. PQC aims to keep cryptographic protections secure against future quantum computers; a ZKP lets someone prove a claim without revealing the secret information behind it. Neither label guarantees the other property, though a system may use both.
What does post-quantum cryptography protect against?
PQC is cryptography designed to withstand attacks from conventional computers and future cryptographically capable quantum computers. The concern is that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could undermine some public-key systems used today. PQC relies on mathematical problems believed to remain difficult for both kinds of computers; it does not mean quantum attacks are already practical. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes the goal in its post-quantum cryptography project.

Different PQC algorithms perform different jobs. Key establishment helps two parties create a shared secret for protecting communications, while digital signatures support authentication and help detect unauthorized data changes. A key-establishment mechanism is not a digital signature.
NIST’s finalized standards
In August 2024, NIST established three standards: FIPS 203 specifies ML-KEM for establishing shared secret keys; FIPS 204 specifies ML-DSA digital signatures; and FIPS 205 specifies SLH-DSA digital signatures. NIST describes ML-KEM as “believed to be secure, even against adversaries who possess a quantum computer”—an assessment, not a guarantee against every future attack. FIPS 203 defines ML-KEM-512, ML-KEM-768, and ML-KEM-1024 parameter sets, ordered by increasing security strength and decreasing performance. See NIST’s FIPS 203, FIPS 204, and FIPS 205.

NIST’s project page summarizes the NIST IR 8547 transition timeline as calling for quantum-vulnerable algorithms to be deprecated and ultimately removed from NIST standards by 2035, with high-risk systems moving earlier. This is NIST’s standards-transition timeline, not a universal deadline for every organization.
What does a zero-knowledge proof hide?
A zero-knowledge proof allows a prover to convince a verifier that a statement is true without revealing the secret information used to support it. For example, someone might prove they meet an age threshold without disclosing their exact birth date.

- Completeness: an honest prover with a true statement can convince an honest verifier.
- Soundness: a false statement should not be accepted, except with the proof system’s small error probability.
- Zero knowledge: the verifier learns no additional information beyond the statement’s validity.
These are properties a proof system is designed to provide, not a promise that an entire application conceals all information. The claim being proved, public inputs, transaction metadata, and other application data may still be visible. Privacy depends on what the system publishes and what its proof actually establishes.
How are PQC and ZKPs different?
| Question | Post-quantum cryptography | Zero-knowledge proofs |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | Can a quantum-capable attacker defeat this cryptographic protection? | Can a prover establish a claim without revealing the secret behind it? |
| Primary purpose | Keep cryptographic protections useful against conventional and future quantum attacks. | Limit what a verifier learns while proving a claim. |
| Typical functions | Shared-key establishment and digital signatures. | Private claims, credentials, and proofs of computation or state validity. |
| Does not automatically provide | Privacy from application data exposure or protection from implementation mistakes. | Quantum resistance, secrecy for data published outside the proof, or sound application design. |
| Can it be combined with the other? | Yes. A system can use quantum-resistant cryptography alongside a suitable ZKP. | Yes. The proof system’s own cryptographic assumptions still need evaluation. |
The categories are not competing algorithms. PQC is a broad goal and family of cryptographic schemes; zero knowledge is a property of proof protocols. To assess a system, identify its threat model, the property it needs, the algorithms and proof assumptions it uses, what data third parties can see, and how the components are implemented.

Are zero-knowledge proofs quantum-proof?
Not automatically. “Zero knowledge” describes what a verifier learns from a proof; it does not by itself say whether the cryptographic assumptions underlying that proof resist quantum attacks. A proof system may offer zero knowledge without offering post-quantum security. Conversely, adopting a PQC algorithm does not make a system’s data private. Evaluate the proof system’s assumptions separately from its privacy property.
Do zero-knowledge rollups keep transactions private?
Not necessarily. A validity proof can show that off-chain state updates were computed correctly without hiding the transaction data needed to check or reconstruct the state. Ethereum.org explains that rollups may publish such data for independent verification: “Publishing this data is what makes permissionless verification possible; it is not a privacy mechanism.” See its Zero-knowledge rollups documentation.

“ZK-rollup” can therefore refer to a rollup using validity proofs, not a guarantee that every transaction is confidential. A proof system can add a zero-knowledge property, but the label alone does not establish which information remains public. Check the architecture and the data it publishes before treating a rollup as private.
Can a system use both?
Yes. Consider an application that needs quantum-resistant authentication and lets a user prove eligibility without disclosing identity details. It could use quantum-resistant signature or key-establishment algorithms for the first requirement and a suitable ZKP for the second. Whether the combination delivers both protections depends on the chosen algorithms, proof assumptions, implementation, and data the application exposes.

For a practical assessment, ask four questions:
- What attacker or disclosure risk is the system meant to address?
- Does it need quantum-resistant key establishment, digital signatures, privacy-preserving proofs, or more than one of these?
- What information is public outside the proof, including inputs and transaction metadata?
- Which exact algorithms and proof assumptions support each claimed protection?
