BHP bought Port Hedland’s Pier Hotel after it closed in 2024, as resources companies were buying back properties in the town’s West End. In April 2025, BHP’s reported plan shifted from discussing the site’s future to demolishing the hotel and creating a community park. The sale price, full buyback terms and current status of the park project have not been reported in the sources cited here.
Who bought the Pier Hotel, and when?
BHP bought the Pier Hotel after the pub closed in 2024. PerthNow reported on 30 August 2024 that BHP was discussing the site’s long-term future with the State Government; the report did not disclose a sale price. PerthNow’s sale report placed the purchase amid a wider West End property buyback.

The hotel had closed after its longtime owner retired. PerthNow reported in July 2024 that mementos, including the pub’s famous DJ ball, were to be auctioned. That auction was a historical event, not an indication that the items remain available. The hotel site was reported as 5,733 square metres; that is a site-area figure, not a sale price. PerthNow’s closure and auction report covered the closure and planned auction.
How the sale fits the West End buyback
The Pier Hotel’s sale was part of a wider pattern of voluntary property buybacks in Port Hedland’s West End. The 2024 report said resources companies had bought most properties in the area amid dust from nearby export operations. It did not quantify the purchases or set out the program’s complete terms, so the hotel’s sale should not be treated as evidence of a disclosed buyback total, a particular eligibility rule or a specific payment arrangement.

BHP’s 2025 demolition and park plan
In April 2025, PerthNow and Business News reported that BHP planned to demolish the hotel and create a public or community park. PerthNow said a condition report prepared as part of due diligence found all ten buildings on the site beyond viable repair because of structural problems, hazardous materials and failure to comply with current building regulations. These are findings attributed to the reported condition assessment, not an independent inspection described here. PerthNow’s April 2025 report and Business News’ report described the proposal.
The 2025 report also said none of the original 1890s Pier Hotel buildings remained at the site. The buildings considered for demolition were therefore not the original hotel structures. A BHP spokeswoman said the company was “pleased to honour the legacy of the Pier Hotel while transforming it into a family-friendly green space for everyone in the community to enjoy.”
What is not established about delivery
The April 2025 announcement described a plan, not a confirmed completion date. The reporting cited here does not establish whether demolition or construction has since begun, when the park might open, or whether the proposal has changed. It also does not give the sale terms.

The nickname grew from a 1970s Sunday Telegraph feature by British journalist John Dyson, according to PerthNow’s 2024 retrospective on the hotel. The label was a reputation reinforced by local lore, not a formal ranking. PerthNow’s retrospective recounts the story and local memories.
