In many U.S. cash games, white chips commonly represent $1, red $5, green $25, black $100 and purple $500. Those colors are conventions, not a universal standard: check the printed denomination or ask the poker room. In tournaments, chips track a player’s tournament stack and do not necessarily represent cash.
Common poker chip colors and values
A familiar U.S. cash-game color ladder is:

These are common conventions, not a rule that every casino or poker room follows. Higher denominations can use different colors, too. Look for a printed value on the chip or confirm the room’s color scheme with staff before buying in or betting. Why chip colors can differ by venue
There is no single industry-wide color code that applies to every poker game. A regulated jurisdiction may prescribe colors for the facilities it oversees, but that does not make its scheme universal.
New York’s regulated gaming-facility schedule
New York’s rules assign white to $1, red to $5, green to $25, black to $100, purple to $500 and orange to $1,000, among other denominations. This schedule applies to regulated gaming facilities under New York’s rules—not to all poker rooms or home games. See 9 NYCRR § 5322.2.

Cash-game chips versus tournament chips
In a cash game, chips ordinarily stand for monetary value. A $5 chip represents $5 in the game, subject to the room’s rules.
Tournament chips instead measure a player’s tournament stack. A stack labeled with a tournament amount does not have to equal the cash buy-in, and tournament chips should not be treated as cash unless the organizer explicitly says otherwise.

How to set values for a home game
For an informal home game, the host can assign values to unmarked chips. The essential step is to announce the mapping before play so that everyone knows what each chip is worth and whether it represents cash or tournament units.
Choose a denomination ladder that fits the game
- Start with the game format: decide whether chips represent money in a cash game or track stacks in a tournament.
- Match the smallest denominations to the starting blinds and the bets players are likely to make. A useful set needs enough low-value chips for ordinary bets and making change.
- Consider player count and likely rebuys when deciding how many chips to distribute or keep available.
- Use a simple, clearly stated color-to-value mapping. Printed denominations can reduce confusion; for unmarked chips, write down or announce the values before dealing.
Home-game examples may use denominations such as T25, T100, T500 and T1,000 for tournament play, but these are illustrative choices, not mandatory standards. Practical setup examples appear in PokerInk’s home-game guide.

What to check when choosing a poker chip set
Choose a set for the game you plan to run, rather than assuming its colors follow a universal value system. Check whether chips are labeled or unmarked, whether the set includes enough low denominations for your blinds, and whether the quantity suits your player count and any planned rebuys. For unmarked chips, decide the values in advance and make the mapping clear to every player.
