Re:

Is Peter Todd in Hiding After a Documentary Named Him as Bitcoin’s Creator?

The 2024 reporting on Peter Todd’s safety presents two different descriptions: WIRED said he was in hiding; Todd later told Decrypt that was an exaggeration.

Whether Peter Todd was “in hiding” became disputed within days of HBO’s Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery advancing the theory that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator. WIRED reported on October 22, 2024, that Todd said he had gone into hiding over safety concerns; Todd told Decrypt on October 25 that he was not in hiding, though he had taken security measures. Neither the identity theory nor Todd’s whereabouts today is established by that reporting.

Is Peter Todd really Satoshi Nakamoto?

Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery advanced the theory that Todd was Satoshi Nakamoto. That is an allegation, not a verified identification. The reporting cited here documents the film’s claim and Todd’s response; it does not prove who created Bitcoin. WIRED’s October 22, 2024 report describes the documentary’s case and Todd’s reaction.

Todd had emailed WIRED before the documentary’s release that “This was clearly going to be a circus.” In the scene that appeared to portray him confessing, he later said, “I was trolling the shit out of him.” Director Cullen Hoback rejected the idea that Todd’s dismissal settled the matter, telling WIRED: “It doesn’t surprise me at all that Peter would go on the offense. He’s a master of game theory—it’s what he does. He has spent a lot of years now muddying the waters.” These are the participants’ statements, not independent proof of the film’s theory.

Was Peter Todd in hiding?

What WIRED reported on October 22, 2024

WIRED reported that Todd said he went into hiding after the film aired because he was concerned about personal safety. The report also said he was receiving unwanted requests for money. This describes what WIRED attributed to Todd at that time, not a confirmed account of his location or a continuing status.

What Todd told Decrypt on October 25, 2024

In an interview published three days later, Todd disputed the label. “The recent Wired article claiming I’m ‘in hiding’ was quite the exaggeration…” he told Decrypt. He said he had taken security measures, adding: “But it’s not a good idea to say exactly what I’ve done publicly. Best to keep the bad guys guessing.” Todd also described public appearances he had made or planned at the time. His account does not establish what precautions he took or where he is now. Decrypt’s October 25, 2024 interview reports his response.

The accounts need not mean the same thing by “in hiding”: WIRED attributed that description to Todd amid safety concerns, while Todd subsequently rejected the characterization and said he had taken precautions. The October 2024 reports do not establish his present whereabouts or current security arrangements.

Do the outdoor photos prove Todd was not Satoshi?

WIRED reported that Todd supplied images of outdoor activities which a superficial metadata review suggested were taken around times Satoshi posted on BitcoinTalk. But WIRED said it had not forensically analyzed the images and could not attest to their value as an alibi. They should not be treated as a verified timeline or as proof for or against the identity theory.

Quick Recap

What can readers conclude?

  • The documentary advanced a theory naming Todd as Satoshi, but the reporting reviewed here does not establish that identification.
  • WIRED reported Todd’s safety concerns and its description that he had gone into hiding; Todd then told Decrypt that description was exaggerated and said he had taken security measures.
  • Both accounts date to October 2024. They do not confirm Todd’s current location or circumstances.
