Rather than offering only payment processing, the company presented MaaS as a way to bring payments, storefronts, fraud controls, analytics and customer support together in one service.
What PlaySpan announced in 2010
PlaySpan framed MaaS as a solution to a fragmented commercial operation: digital publishers could otherwise be managing payment systems, storefronts, risk tools, reporting and support separately. GamesBeat’s contemporaneous launch coverage described a web-based platform intended to consolidate those functions. CEO Karl Mehta presented the service as a way to simplify monetization and implementation; that was the company’s launch-era positioning, not an independently measured outcome.
The scale figures reported at the time were also historical claims. GamesBeat said PlaySpan had more than 1,000 customers, more than 160 employees and had raised $42 million. It reported that the company said it was adding 100 new customers a week. These are figures from 2010 reporting, not current operating metrics or audited totals.
What the MaaS platform included
Game Developer’s October 2010 account described a hosted, API-enabled service, with UltimatePay as a payment component. The reported bundle covered:

Game Developer reported that UltimatePay offered more than 85 payment options in more than 180 countries. Those figures describe the offering as reported in 2010; they should not be read as a current payment-method list or coverage map.
What one customer said about consolidation
GamesBeat reported that Atlus USA payments and fraud manager Ana Gonzalez said the company had been able to use one PlaySpan platform where it had previously used 15. She also said implementation took less than three weeks. This is a specific customer account in launch-era coverage, not evidence that other publishers would have the same implementation scope or timeline.

What happened after the launch
Visa announced on February 9, 2011, that it had agreed to acquire PlaySpan. In its announcement, Visa described PlaySpan as a privately held company whose payments platform handled transactions for digital goods in online games, digital media and social networks. Visa said the MaaS product combined payment and commerce solutions with fraud and risk management, analytics, merchandising and global payment connectivity; merchants used it for purchases such as game credits, premium memberships and digital goods.
Visa then announced completion of the acquisition on March 1, 2011. The announcement and completion are distinct events. Those releases establish the acquisition, but do not establish whether the original MaaS platform continued, was absorbed into another product or was retired. Its present status is therefore not established by these historical records.
