If you are in France, you cannot lawfully play online casino roulette for real money: the French Ministry of Economy says online casino games are prohibited. French roulette itself is a single-zero game, but the name does not make a remote casino offer legal or guarantee a particular rule such as La Partage.
Is French roulette legal online in France?
No. The French Ministry of Economy’s guidance, dated 17 June 2026, says “Les jeux de casino en ligne quant à eux sont interdits” (“Online casino games, on the other hand, are prohibited”). That means an online casino listing French roulette is not evidence that real-money play is authorized for someone in France. Do not assume an offshore site is permitted simply because it accepts registrations or deposits.
France’s gambling regulator, ANJ, describes a category-specific framework for online gambling and obligations addressing issues including underage and excessive gambling, fraud, and money laundering. Authorization for a different gambling category does not establish permission to offer online casino roulette. Check the regulator responsible for your location and confirm that both the operator and the particular gambling category are allowed before depositing money.
What does French roulette mean?
A single-zero wheel
French casino roulette has 37 pockets: numbers 1 through 36 and one zero. Article 51 of the French casino regulation states: “Les seuls appareils autorisés sont les roulettes à trente-six numéros et un zéro” (“The only authorized devices are roulette wheels with thirty-six numbers and one zero”). The single zero distinguishes it from roulette wheels that also have a double zero.

The regulation also sets out authorized betting combinations and payouts. A straight-up bet on one number pays 35 times the stake in winnings under that regulation; the original stake is separate from those winnings. A specific online game’s published rules should be checked for its own table and payout presentation.
French rules for casino roulette do not authorize remote play
French regulation describes electronic roulette as a casino format involving a wheel and an individual player station or screen. That concerns regulated casino operation; it is not permission for an internet casino to offer roulette remotely. The physical or electronic format of a game and the legality of online access are separate questions.

What is La Partage?
La Partage is a rule that returns half of an even-money bet when zero appears. Even-money bets include wagers such as red or black, odd or even, and high or low. The reviewed BGaming French Roulette rules say: “According to this rule, you lose only half of your even-money bets when the spinning result is zero (0).”
Do not assume La Partage is active just because a game is labelled “French roulette.” It is a game-specific rule, so read the table’s rules before wagering. The BGaming document also states an RTP of 97.3% for that particular game. That provider-published figure is not a universal French roulette RTP and does not predict what any individual player will win or lose.

How to check an online roulette offer before risking money
- Check your location’s law and regulator. Look for current official guidance on whether online casino roulette is permitted where you are. For France, the Ministry’s guidance says online casino games are prohibited.
- Verify the operator and game category separately. A regulator’s authorization for another form of gambling does not establish authorization for online casino roulette.
- Read the game rules. Confirm the number of zero pockets, whether La Partage or another zero rule applies, the payouts, and any stated RTP for that particular game.
- Check limits and format. Review minimum and maximum bets and whether the game is live or automated. These details vary by game and operator and are not established as universal French roulette terms.
- Do not treat RTP or a betting system as a session forecast. An RTP is a long-run theoretical measure stated for a specific game, not a promise about an individual session; no roulette system guarantees winnings.
What this means if you are outside France
The French prohibition does not determine the rules in another country. The available sources establish neither legality outside France nor a list of approved operators in other jurisdictions. Before playing, check the current rules and regulator in your own location; do not infer authorization from French roulette’s name, a provider’s game rules, or a site’s availability.
