8.25% is not established as a current general-public bank FD rate. Unity Small Finance Bank advertised that rate for certain tenures on a card effective February 12, 2025. Its later card, effective May 21, 2026, lists 7.50% for general customers and 8.00% for senior citizens on a 12-month deposit. The examples below are dated rate-card figures, not a ranking of every bank or a guarantee of rates available today.
Which bank offered 8.25%, and is it still available?
Unity Small Finance Bank’s rate card effective February 12, 2025 included an 8.25% rate for certain tenures. That figure should be treated as a historical offer, not a current general-public rate. The bank’s later card, effective May 21, 2026, lists 7.50% for general customers and 8.00% for senior citizens at 12 months, with 6.75% and 7.25% respectively across several other listed tenures. The card says rates may change without prior notice. Check the Unity Small Finance Bank rate card for the applicable offer before opening a deposit.
How do the dated bank-rate examples compare?
These examples show why an FD rate needs its bank, date, tenure, depositor category and deposit-size band. They are not an exhaustive market comparison, and rates may change after the effective dates shown.

What does an FD rate tell you—and what does it leave out?
The Reserve Bank of India defines a term deposit as money accepted for a fixed period and withdrawable after that period expires. Its definition also includes recurring, cumulative, annuity and reinvestment deposits. The stated rate alone does not tell you whether interest is paid periodically or reinvested, whether early withdrawal is allowed, or what return applies to your particular deposit.
The RBI homepage displayed a savings-deposit rate of 2.50% and a term-deposit range above one year of 6.00%–6.75%, with data dated October 1, 2026. This is regulator-published context, not a ranking of individual bank offers. See the Reserve Bank of India for its current published data and deposit directions.

What to check before choosing a bank FD
- Exact tenure: Match the stated offer to the precise term, including any special-day tenure, rather than assuming a nearby duration pays the same rate.
- Eligibility and deposit size: Confirm whether the rate is for general customers or a qualifying category, and whether your deposit amount falls in the relevant band.
- Interest option: Check whether the product pays interest periodically or compounds/reinvests it. The headline nominal rate is not the same as the amount you will receive under every payout option.
- Early access: Read the bank’s premature-withdrawal and non-callable terms before locking away money. Central Bank of India lists a 1% premature-withdrawal penalty on its page and says non-callable deposits do not permit premature withdrawal except under specified exceptions. Federal Bank publishes its own penalty structure. These are bank- and product-specific terms, not universal rules.
- Rate-card date: Use the live official card and confirm its effective date when applying; a published rate may change without notice.
Are senior-citizen FD rates always higher?
No single senior-citizen premium applies across all banks and products. Central Bank of India says qualifying senior citizens receive an additional 0.50 percentage point per annum on its time-deposit schemes. Treat that as the bank’s stated policy, and check the specific scheme’s eligibility and rate card rather than assuming another bank offers the same addition.

The rate cards cited here do not establish current income-tax treatment, deduction thresholds or tax-deduction-at-source rules for FD interest. They also do not establish the current DICGC insurance limit or how coverage aggregates across a depositor’s accounts at one bank. Check the relevant tax authority and DICGC’s current official guidance before relying on figures for either question.
