Do not assume standard travel insurance covers every sport or adventure activity. Check the policy wording for each activity and its conditions, then confirm that medical treatment, emergency transport and repatriation are covered for your itinerary. Some activities may require specialist insurance or an add-on; the policy contract, your circumstances and current destination advice determine what applies.
Start with the activities you plan to do
Make a list of every activity, including one-off excursions and activities included in a tour. Government guidance in the UK says bungee jumping, jet skiing, winter sports and skydiving are examples of activities not usually included in standard policies; this is a general warning, not a rule for every insurer or policy. Some activities need specialist cover or an add-on. GOV.UK travel insurance guidance
Look up each activity by name in the policy wording or, where applicable, the product disclosure statement (PDS). Read the definition, exclusions, limits and conditions—not just a summary of included sports. Check details the wording may specify, such as altitude, depth, whether an activity is guided, whether skiing is off-piste, and where it takes place.
Why similar activities may be treated differently
Coverage for one activity does not establish coverage for a related one. Australian government guidance gives the example of policies that cover canyoning but exclude abseiling, or cover abseiling but not when it is done into a canyon. It also advises checking conditions such as whether snowboarding must take place at a resort rather than off-piste. Smartraveller travel insurance guidance

Check the cover beyond the activity itself
An activity may be listed as covered under one benefit but not another. Check the policy sections separately for costs and losses that matter to your trip:
- Medical care: Check emergency medical treatment, hospital care and ambulance costs, along with applicable limits and excesses.
- Emergency transport and repatriation: Confirm whether evacuation or other emergency transport and return travel are covered, and what limits or conditions apply.
- Liability and belongings: Check personal liability and any cover for sports equipment; do not infer that either is included because the activity itself is covered.
- Cancellation and interruption: Read the relevant terms for disrupted travel separately from medical and evacuation cover. A policy focused on travel disruption may not pay medical costs.
For a useful comparison, assess whether each named activity is covered and under what conditions; medical, transport, evacuation and repatriation limits; activity-specific sublimits and excesses; relevant exclusions and eligibility; and assistance or preauthorization requirements. Which policy is suitable depends on your location, itinerary, health circumstances and the current contract.

Check trip, health and destination conditions
- Pre-existing conditions: Follow the policy’s declaration requirements, including for conditions under investigation or pending tests or treatment. UK government guidance warns that failing to disclose relevant conditions may invalidate cover.
- Trip length and eligibility: Check the maximum continuous trip length and any annual travel limits, as well as age and destination eligibility.
- Destination advice: Review current official travel advice for every destination, including transit points. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office says travel to a place against which it advises all but essential travel or all travel may invalidate insurance. Check the actual contract and current advice rather than assuming the same consequence applies to every policy.
- Other exclusions: Read exclusions relevant to your itinerary, which may address alcohol or drugs, high-risk destinations, natural disasters, civil unrest or other circumstances. Wording and applicability differ by policy.

Confirm unclear terms with the insurer before departure
- Write down every planned activity and the circumstances in which you will do it.
- Find each activity in the policy wording or PDS. Note its definition, conditions, exclusions, limits and the benefits to which it applies.
- Check medical expenses, emergency transport, evacuation and repatriation, plus trip length, destinations, health declarations, excesses and activity-specific limits.
- Ask the insurer to clarify any uncertain activity or condition before you travel. Keep the response and policy details with your trip information.
- Save the emergency assistance number and check how to contact the assistance service, including whether treatment needs preauthorization. Official UK, Australian, US and Canadian guidance recommends checking relevant cover and assistance arrangements; the terms of your own policy control. Government of Canada travel insurance guidance
