Visas, transfers, meals, baggage, insurance and foreign-payment charges may be extra, depending on your itinerary and what the quote includes. The Economic Times framed selected add-ons as potentially raising a trip budget by 25–40%, but that range is not a universal average or a guaranteed increase. Price each item for your destination, dates, travelers and booking before setting your total.
What the 25–40% estimate does—and does not—mean
The 25–40% figure comes from a 2026 Economic Times article’s framing of possible additions to a holiday budget. The available sources do not establish it as an independently measured overrun that applies to every trip. Treat it as a prompt to check what a headline price leaves out, not as a formula: multiplying every ₹2 lakh holiday by that percentage could overstate or understate your actual costs.

Your extra spend depends on the destination, travel dates, number of travelers, airline and package terms, and the activities you choose. Build a trip-specific estimate from the checklist below rather than relying on a generic contingency percentage.

Check what a tour package actually includes
Before comparing package prices, request a written list of inclusions and exclusions. An advertised price may not cover every cost you will need to reach the hotel, eat, or complete the itinerary. The Economic Times identifies these potential extras:
#1 Best Overall
- Visa or other entry-related charges
- Airport and local transfers
- Sightseeing tickets and optional excursions
- Meals beyond those specified, such as breakfast
- Local or hotel taxes and resort surcharges
- Tips
Ask which costs are compulsory, which are optional, and whether any amount can change after booking. Compare packages using the same itinerary and inclusions; a lower headline price may simply leave more of the trip for you to pay for separately.
Price the flight beyond its base fare
Check the baggage allowance and seat-selection terms for every flight segment, including connecting flights. An itinerary can involve different airlines or fare conditions, so one allowance may not apply throughout. Paid seat selection and extra baggage fees vary by airline, route and booking conditions; use the actual quote for your flights rather than copying examples from another traveler’s trip.
Also check whether the fare allows changes and what charges or fare differences would apply if plans shift. Include only costs that matter to your itinerary, but make the airline’s rules part of the comparison before you book.

Estimate visa and entry costs for your destination
Visa, transit and other entry or exit requirements are destination-specific and can depend on your passport, route and travel purpose. Check the destination’s official government or consular information for current requirements, fees, processing steps and whether an application charge is refundable. India’s Ministry of External Affairs advises travelers to check visa and other entry or exit requirements before departure: MEA travel advisories.
Do not use another traveler’s visa fee as your estimate. If your route includes a transit stop, check whether separate transit rules apply to your circumstances.
Account for foreign-currency payments
Look up the actual foreign-transaction fee and conversion terms for the card you intend to use. The amount charged in rupees can depend on the card issuer’s terms and the exchange rate used for the transaction, so do not assume the displayed foreign-currency price will equal the final rupee cost.
Rank #3
If a merchant terminal or ATM offers to convert the charge into Indian rupees, compare the displayed rate and any stated fee before choosing. Visa explains that dynamic currency conversion (DCC) may use a merchant-set exchange rate and include additional fees or a markup; you can accept or decline the conversion: Visa’s DCC guidance. The rupee amount shown at the terminal is not automatically the cheaper option.
Exchange rates can move between planning and payment. Ramesh Vishwanathan, CEO of Financial Planning Standards Board India, advised in the Economic Times article: “Build some currency headroom into your savings target rather than assuming that today’s exchange rate will hold until the trip.” The amount of headroom is a personal planning choice, not a fixed fee.
Budget for day-to-day spending and activities
Make a daily estimate based on your actual plans for meals, local transport, water, tips and activities. Check which meals your accommodation or package covers, how you will travel between planned stops, and whether attractions require tickets or advance reservations. Food, beverages, tips and optional activities can add up, but costs vary too widely by destination and itinerary to use a single reliable “typical” amount.
Rank #4
Separate the activities you consider essential from optional ones. That makes it easier to estimate the cost of the trip you intend to take without treating every possible excursion as a necessary expense.
Include insurance in the trip estimate
India’s Ministry of External Affairs advises travelers to take appropriate travel and comprehensive medical insurance to cover unexpected costs. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India also advises travelers to read policy terms and confirm support details with the insurer. Compare policies by the coverage limits, exclusions, emergency assistance and claims process relevant to your trip, rather than choosing on price alone.

Check whether the cover addresses the risks that matter for your itinerary and whether any activities or pre-existing conditions are excluded. Keep the insurer’s assistance details accessible while traveling. MEA’s travel guidance and IRDAI’s travel insurance information are useful starting points.

Do not assume a TCS amount without checking current rules
The exact current tax collected at source (TCS) treatment for a ₹2 lakh holiday was not established by the available authoritative information as of 9 October 2026. Published explanations cited different rates, thresholds or revisions, and the answer may depend on the applicable rules and how the trip is paid for. Do not add a fixed TCS rate to your estimate based on a general article. Ask the tour operator or payment provider for the applicable calculation and verify it against current official tax rules for your payment route.
Likewise, a GST valuation rule for foreign-currency exchange services is not a consumer’s actual exchange spread and should not be treated as a single GST percentage on the full cost of a holiday.
Build a trip-specific total before you commit
- Start with the quoted amount. Record whether it is a package or airfare-only price, who is covered, and what dates and itinerary it applies to.
- Get the inclusions and exclusions in writing. Check accommodation, meals, transfers, sightseeing, taxes, surcharges and tips.
- Price entry and flight requirements. Verify destination-specific visa and transit costs, plus baggage and seat fees for each flight segment.
- Add the costs you will pay during the trip. Estimate meals not included, local transport, tickets, activities, tips and other planned spending.
- Check payment and protection costs. Review your card’s foreign transaction terms, any DCC offer, insurance coverage and the provider’s explanation of any applicable TCS.
- Allow for uncertainty you can identify. Consider exchange-rate movement and itinerary-specific changes without treating the 25–40% headline range as a required buffer.
When comparing a package with self-booking, compare the combined cost of airfare, accommodation, transfers, visa, meals, activities, baggage, payment costs and insurance. The cheapest headline is not necessarily the lowest total once equivalent parts of the trip are included.
Keep regulatory limits separate from your holiday budget
The Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme allows resident individuals to remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year for private visits abroad, excluding Nepal and Bhutan; related tour expenses and overseas lodging count within that aggregate limit. This is a regulatory allowance, not a recommended travel budget or an estimate of what a holiday should cost. Check the RBI’s LRS guidance for the applicable rules.
