No. Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Limited’s (PIACL) open bidding for a 75% stake took place on 23 December 2025 and has concluded. The Privatisation Commission now reports that first financial closing was achieved and management control transferred to the Arif Habib Corporation-led consortium. A separate October 2026 headline says four investors were prequalified, but it does not establish that a new bidding round is open or give a bid date.
When did the PIA bidding take place?
The Government announced on 22 December 2025 that sealed bids for 75% of PIACL shares would be submitted at 10:30 a.m. the next day, with the opening ceremony scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on 23 December. The event was to be televised and streamed. Those times referred to the December 2025 auction, not a live event today. The Press Information Department’s announcement gives the original schedule.
Who won, and what does the Rs. 180 billion figure mean?
The Privatisation Commission reports that the 23 December 2025 bidding resulted in a total investment commitment of Rs. 180 billion from the winning Arif Habib Corporation-led consortium. That amount has two distinct components: Rs. 55 billion payable to the Government of Pakistan for the sale, and Rs. 125 billion to be injected into PIACL as fresh equity. It is not accurate to describe the full Rs. 180 billion as cash paid to the Government. The Commission’s current top story reports the bid result and the closing and handover status.
Has the transaction closed?
The Commission’s current top story says first financial closing was achieved and management control transferred to the consortium. This is the latest closing status established by the available official update.

What happened to the remaining 25%?
On 30 April 2026, the Press Information Department reported that the consortium had notified the Privatisation Commission of its intention to acquire the remaining 25% equity stake by exercising a call option under the Share Purchase and Subscription Agreement signed on 29 January 2026. The notice said first closing was expected by 25 May 2026, subject to conditions precedent. That was a prospective expectation in the April announcement, not confirmation of the actual closing date. The announcement also described planned private investment as approximately PKR 180 billion, comprising at least PKR 55 billion for the Government and PKR 125 billion in fresh equity. What did the competition regulator approve?
On 29 April 2026, the Competition Commission of Pakistan announced Phase-I approval of the proposed acquisition by PIA Equity Limited. The regulator described PIA Equity Limited as a special-purpose company incorporated on 9 January 2026 by a consortium including Arif Habib Corporation Limited, Fatima Fertilizer Company Limited, Lake City Holdings, The City School and AKD Group Holdings. It concluded that the acquisition would not create or strengthen a dominant position in the relevant markets. See the Competition Commission’s approval announcement.

Does the October 2026 prequalification headline mean bids are open?
No such conclusion follows from the headline alone. The Privatisation Commission homepage dated 5 October 2026 lists a story saying four investors were prequalified for PIA, but the available listing does not explain whether that refers to a new transaction, a later stage, or another aspect of ownership. Prequalification is not evidence by itself of an open auction or a current bid date. Check the Commission’s detailed announcement for the scope and any schedule before treating it as a new bidding round.
