Pfizer laid off 100 employees in Bothell in August 2025, according to a state filing cited by GeekWire. Bothell is in the Seattle area; the reports do not establish the exact separation date for each worker.
What happened at Pfizer’s Bothell site
GeekWire reported on August 25, 2025, that a Washington Employment Security Department filing listed 100 affected Pfizer employees at the Bothell worksite. Fierce Pharma reported the same count and location the following day, describing the site as Seagen’s former headquarters. GeekWire’s report and Fierce Pharma’s report are the published accounts of the filing.
The figure is a reported notice count, not a public accounting of individual workers’ circumstances. Washington’s WARN database generally displays an employer, worksite, effective date, affected-worker count, layoff or closure type, date the notice was received, and a downloadable notice. The two reports establish the count and Bothell location, but do not provide the precise separation dates for every employee.
What Washington’s layoff notice rules mean
Washington Employment Security Department says its state mass-layoff rule applies when an employer lays off 50 or more full-time workers at a single site within a 30-day period. Covered employers must provide written notice 60 days before a layoff. The state notes that its law differs from federal WARN and does not cover every closure, layoff, or reduction in hours.

Those rules explain the state-notice context; they do not by themselves establish whether a particular filing was compliant or reveal the circumstances of each worker. The department describes its database and notice fields on its WARN database page and summarizes the state requirements on its WARN requirements page.
Why Bothell is significant to Pfizer
Pfizer’s Bothell campus is a research, office, laboratory, and manufacturing site focused on cancer treatment. The company says the site opened in 1998 and spans 500,000 square feet, with work that includes antibody discovery, chemistry, biology, immunology, antibody-drug-conjugate design, and translational pathology. GeekWire reported that Pfizer acquired Seagen for $43 billion in 2023, when Seagen had about 3,300 employees. The outlet also reported an earlier reduction of about 120 employees tied to stopping construction of a planned 270,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. Those are separate background events, not details of the 100-person 2025 filing.

Fierce Pharma quoted a Pfizer spokesperson saying the company was improving R&D productivity and efficiency, focusing on opportunities, and simplifying work through digital enablement and automation. Pfizer said it believed those efforts would have the greatest impact for patients. This is a general company explanation; the report does not say that automation directly caused each job loss.

The published accounts do not identify affected teams or job titles, explain individual selection decisions, say whether work moved elsewhere, or describe severance and other worker support. The filing count and Pfizer’s broad R&D statement cannot answer those employee-specific questions.
