Fashion Thrift Society: Perth’s Thrift-Market Boom and the Appeal of Pre-Loved Fashion

Fashion Thrift Society blends pre-loved fashion with music, food and local vendors. Here’s what Perth’s reported market figures do—and don’t—show about its audience and appeal.

Fashion Thrift Society turns second-hand shopping into a social market, bringing vintage and pre-loved clothing together with music, food and local businesses. PerthNow reported more than 200 curated vendors at one Leederville edition in 2025. The event reflects interest in affordable, distinctive fashion—but the available figures do not establish that Perth’s younger shoppers as a whole are driving a current boom.

What is Fashion Thrift Society?

Fashion Thrift Society is a market built around vintage and pre-loved fashion, with entertainment and other market stalls alongside clothing. PerthNow’s 2022 profile described sellers, local small businesses, DJs, live music, and food and drink trucks. Organizer Melody McCarthy said its essence was “sustainable fashion and a thrift market.”

A later PerthNow report covered a Leederville event at Loftus Recreation Centre in May 2025, where more than 200 curated vendors offered apparel, designer garments, footwear, accessories and home decor. That count describes that edition, not every Fashion Thrift Society market.

What does the evidence say about its audience?

In the 2022 PerthNow report, McCarthy said the market averaged 5,000–6,000 attendees and that most customers were aged 16–26. Those are organizer-reported figures from 2022, not a current attendance count or a recent demographic survey. They support describing a sizable event with a young audience at that time, but not claiming that today’s Perth thrift shoppers are predominantly young.

There is broader evidence that younger shoppers value unique and past-season finds, but it is not Perth-specific. The State of Fashion 2026 reports that 61 percent of surveyed consumers said they would continue buying or selling through resale websites even if they had more money to spend. That finding points to resale interest beyond tight budgets; it does not explain every shopper’s choices or establish why people attend this particular market.

Why shop second-hand?

Stretching a clothing budget

Pre-loved clothing can offer a way to look for clothes without buying everything new. PerthNow’s 2025 market coverage listed garments across categories, including designer pieces, while St Vincent de Paul Society WA presents its shops as affordable pre-loved fashion retailers. Whether a second-hand item is cheaper than a comparable new one depends on the item, its condition and the seller. The cited coverage does not provide a like-for-like price comparison between thrift markets, charity shops and resale apps.

Finding distinctive pieces

Resale can appeal to people looking for garments that feel less common or come from past seasons. The State of Fashion 2026 identifies the discovery of unique and past-season items as an attraction for younger shoppers in its broader consumer context. At a market, shoppers can browse a mix of independent sellers and assess garments in person; an online resale platform offers a different browsing experience and selection.

Style and sustainability

Fashion interest and environmental concern can overlap. In ABC News’ 2025 Fashion Week coverage, RMIT fashion and textiles senior lecturer Dr Harriette Richards said awareness of sustainability issues had grown and that sustainability had also become fashionable. The comment describes a cultural trend, not a measured explanation for every purchase.

Is second-hand fashion more sustainable?

Buying pre-loved clothing can keep an existing garment in use, but the environmental effect depends on what the purchase replaces and how the garment is used. The reporting cited here does not calculate the emissions or waste impact of Fashion Thrift Society, or of an individual shopper’s purchase.

The scale of textile waste provides context, not proof of a market’s effect. ABC News reported an ABS estimate that 800,000 tonnes of textile, leather and rubber waste was discarded in Australia in the 2018–19 financial year, with just under 75 percent sent directly to landfill. That national figure should not be read as evidence that one event or one second-hand purchase changes the total.

What can you find at a Perth thrift market?

The May 2025 Leederville edition reported by PerthNow featured apparel, designer garments, footwear, accessories and home decor, alongside the market’s broader food, music and small-business atmosphere. That is a snapshot of one event; the available reporting does not establish which vendors or categories will appear at another date.

For a personal-finance decision, treat the market as an opportunity to compare actual items rather than assume every stall is a bargain. Check condition, fit and price before buying, and compare the total cost with alternatives you would genuinely consider. Current dates, venues, vendors and ticket availability can change, so check Fashion Thrift Society’s official event information before making plans.

Market shopping or online resale?

Neither channel is automatically cheaper. A market makes it possible to inspect condition and fit in person and adds a social event; online resale lets shoppers browse remotely but may involve shipping and makes the item harder to assess before delivery. Selection and prices vary in both settings, and the cited sources do not offer a direct price comparison.

  • Choose a market if in-person discovery, checking an item before paying, and the event experience matter to you.
  • Choose online resale if remote browsing or searching across listings is more convenient, and you are comfortable checking seller details and accounting for shipping.
  • Compare the full cost—including travel or delivery—and buy only if the item suits your needs and budget.
