Pete Hegseth said, “Nobody was texting war plans,” after The Atlantic reported that its editor in chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, had been inadvertently included in a Signal group discussing a planned U.S. strike on Houthi targets in Yemen. When The Atlantic published the messages two days later, they showed officials discussing operational details, including timing. That record supports a distinction between Hegseth’s characterization and what the messages contained; it does not, by itself, settle their formal classification status.
What Hegseth said about The Atlantic’s report
On March 24, 2025, reporters asked Hegseth about The Atlantic’s account of the Signal chat. He responded: “Nobody was texting war plans, and that’s all I have to say about that.” The Atlantic’s account of his response described Goldberg’s inadvertent inclusion in a group chat about an impending U.S. strike in Yemen.
Hegseth’s statement denied that the participants were texting “war plans.” It did not deny that the group chat existed. The distinction matters because the messages themselves were not published until March 26.
What the released Signal messages showed
When The Atlantic published the message record, it included discussion of the planned strike and operational timing information. The Associated Press reported that Hegseth provided exact timings for warplane launches and bomb drops before the aircraft were airborne. Readers can review The Atlantic’s published messages and the Associated Press account.

| Question | What the record establishes |
|---|---|
| What did Hegseth say? | On March 24, he said, “Nobody was texting war plans, and that’s all I have to say about that.” |
| What did the published messages contain? | Discussion of a planned strike against Houthi targets in Yemen, including operational timing details. |
| Was the material formally classified? | The sources cited here do not establish a final official classification determination. |
Why operational detail and classification are separate questions
Information can describe operational activity without the available record proving how the government formally classified it. The published messages show the kind of content under dispute; they do not alone establish a final legal or administrative finding about classification. The same caution applies to other possible official findings: the sources cited here do not establish final conclusions about records-retention violations or personal accountability.
A House hearing transcript later recounted the episode and included Hegseth’s chat message, “We are currently clean on OPSEC.” The transcript documents that the matter reached congressional proceedings, but it is not itself a final classification ruling.
