Perth riders have alleged that repeated driver cancellations coincided with sharp Uber fare increases, especially at busy times. Those reports raise a legitimate question, but they do not prove drivers coordinated cancellations to trigger surge pricing. Uber says surge is generated automatically when local rider demand exceeds available drivers; riders who believe a fare was applied or changed incorrectly can ask Uber to review it.
What Perth riders reported
On 22 February 2022, PerthNow reported complaints from riders who said drivers cancelled multiple bookings in quick succession and fares rose while they waited. The examples were individual accounts, not survey results or verified findings of driver coordination.

One rider, Nick Winmar, told PerthNow that an eight-minute trip from City Beach to Cottesloe cost $91. The report also described a Carramar rider who said a trip that usually cost about $10 rose to $68 while a friend waited. Other riders recounted four cancellations within minutes or said they saw a fare increase after repeated cancellations. These are anecdotes reported in 2022, not typical-fare benchmarks or independently confirmed cases of collusion. (PerthNow)
How Uber says surge pricing works
Uber says surge activates automatically when there are more riders in an area than available drivers. Its explanation identifies rider demand and driver availability as the primary inputs, with an algorithm updating prices in real time at a hyperlocal level. Uber says drivers are notified about busy areas and riders may see the premium ease if they wait. The company describes the purpose this way: “Surge pricing is designed to restore the balance between driver availability and rider demand.” That is Uber’s account of its system, not an independent audit of any particular Perth fare. What affects an Uber fare in Perth
Uber announced that an updated standard-fare structure took effect in Perth and several other Australian cities on 21 August 2024. The company said fares vary according to trip origin, day of the week and time of day, and that riders see the cost before requesting. Uber also said fare components appear in the emailed receipt and in the app. These are the terms in that 2024 announcement; the app’s current quote and help information are the best references for a trip today. An upfront quote is not necessarily the final amount in every situation. Uber’s fare guidance says a fare may change if the pickup or destination changes, the route deviates, extra stops are added, or heavy traffic makes the trip take longer. It invites riders who believe a fare changed unfairly to submit it for review. (Uber Help: fare changes)
How to dispute a fare or report a concern
- Save the trip details. Keep the upfront quote if available, the receipt, pickup and destination details, and relevant cancellation records. This is practical preparation, not a stated Uber requirement.
- Open the trip in the Uber app. Go to Activity, select the trip, then open its Help options. Choose the fare or pricing issue that best matches what happened and describe the discrepancy.
- Explain what changed. Include the quoted amount, final charge, any route, stop or pickup changes, and the sequence of cancellations if relevant. Ask for a review rather than assuming the fare change proves misconduct.
- Report suspected incorrect surge through Uber Help. Uber’s Australian help page provides a reporting route for riders who believe surge was incorrectly applied. For a fare that changed after the trip, use the fare-review guidance. (Surge pricing help; Fare changes help)
What Uber’s rules say about manipulation
Uber’s Community Guidelines say prohibited fraudulent activity includes deliberately increasing trip time or distance for fraudulent purposes, accepting requests without intending to complete them, and actions intended to manipulate normal platform functioning. This is a general policy statement. It does not establish that the conduct alleged in Perth occurred or say whether a particular complaint was investigated. (Uber Community Guidelines)

Comparing options when a quote spikes
If a fare looks unusually high, compare live quotes for the same route and time rather than relying on a usual-fare estimate. Check whether each quote is upfront or subject to adjustments, and consider likely waiting, cancellation and support experiences. The reported Perth examples do not establish current prices for Uber or other services, so they cannot show which option is cheaper today.
