Aquarium Seafood Chinese Restaurant in Ascot was fined A$100,000 after a food-safety prosecution, according to a PerthNow report published on 18 June 2022. The report said the case was sentenced in Perth Magistrate’s Court in May 2022, following City of Belmont inspections in 2021.
Which restaurant was fined, and when?
PerthNow identified the business as Aquarium Seafood Chinese Restaurant in Ascot and its owner as Choi Wan Chong. The report said Chong was fined A$100,000 at a sentencing hearing in Perth Magistrate’s Court in May 2022. These details and the case account below are reported by PerthNow; no court judgment or sentencing transcript was located to independently verify the particulars.
What did inspectors reportedly find?
PerthNow said City of Belmont staff carried out routine and follow-up inspections in June and July 2021. Its account described thick grease and oil, food waste, dirty surfaces and equipment, live and dead cockroaches and eggs, rodent faeces on trays, and faeces in an uncovered container of rice.
The report also quoted prosecutor David Gillett describing food splatter and dirty fixtures: “There were food splatter marks on the ceiling in the kitchen area, as well as dirty light switches and power points and dirty shelves,” he said. This is the wording reproduced in the news report, not a transcript independently checked against the court record.

What did the magistrate say?
PerthNow attributed the description that the premises were not safe to “serve animals, let alone human beings” to sentencing Magistrate Lynette Dias. The report also said Dias called the restaurant’s condition “sickening”, “disgusting” and “nauseating”. These remarks are attributed as reported by PerthNow; the original sentencing transcript was not available.
What the A$100,000 fine does—and does not—establish
The A$100,000 figure is the fine reported for this particular prosecution. PerthNow described it as one of the most serious prosecutions under the Food Act, but the available information does not establish that it was the highest penalty or a record fine. A reliable record claim would require comparative court or government data.
